375H&H deer only loads

blackbearhunter375H&H deer only loads
Since i hemmoraged my right eye back this past winter shooting a 458magnum,i have been shying away from heavy recoil with a passion

.I dont want to stop shooting but feel my hard heavy recoiling days are numbered/gone now, dont want to have anymore eye exploding problems and have been hit in the head and body slammed enough as it is

.What would be a good low recoil 375 round for deer?anyone tried the winchester375 bullet in the 375H&H?What about the 235 or 250gr. bullets? Are they recommended?

I can still shoot the 270 and 300 but in small doses to be safe and i would like to shoot some of the lesser rounds so i can shoot more and worry less.Last time i checked i didnt have any elephants running around here anyway......

What is the closest equvilent cartridge to the lowest 375H&H reloaded round?338 or what?

I read on here big bores can be downloaded, sooo no need to trade my favorite mediumbore rifle right?I hate to think i am limited to a 243 or something smaller like a 22short!

Or do you guys feel my docter is just silly and since i dont shoot a 458 anymore i should be ok?

I found out the 458 has more recoil for me and iam not cut out for it,i met my limit with that round.

I did have to lay my head on the stock to see the sights they were so low,and the recoil just ran stright up my eye!Dont never do that if you can help it.

Anyone ever do that or worse?

I know the 577trex has got to be hell!

Anyway iam ready to get me some little bullets and reload some up and have a good old fashion ball shooting them!

Thanks in advance for the help!!!

HunterJimBBHunter,
Hornady loads the .376 Steyr with their Spire Point 270 grain and 225 grain loads, with the 225 being a "reduced load", i.e. same muzzle velocity as the 270 grain.
I have shot deer size animals with the 270, the 225 will do fine on them too.
You make a great argument for a stock that fits you!

500grainsOn deer I would use some of those 220 grain flat nose bullets that were made for the .375 Win. They will definitely open up...

mstarlingIf you are looking for reasonable recoil and deer sized game ... try cast or jacketed slugs with XMR-5744. Seems to be good for very slow moving loads.
Even the .470 NE double rifle is pleasant with a 500 gr gas checked flat point bullet moving at 1500-1600 fps. And the bullet kills deer just fine thanks.
The .375 H&H with 235s moving at warp drive has not been good on deer because the Speer projectile tends to come apart on impact. Needs to be slowed down to less than 2400 I expect.
The recoil of the .338 WM seems to me to be sharper than the larger bores ... but that probably has something to do with rifle weight too. My .338 is 8+ pounds loaded with scope and sling. My .375 H&H is 9 1/2+ pounds loaded the same way.
Hope you are successful in your search for something you can shoot.

Knifemaker,
http://www.mstarling.com I've loaded up Hornady 220's with xmp-5744 for a light recoiling, very accurate load. Not sure of velocity, but probably 2200. Accurate's web site has 5744 loads, and I think Hornady's manual has some also. bob

RedlanderA friend of mine that reloads for me really likes the 210 gr. and 235 gr. Barnes X bullets. Loaded to 2600 or 2700 fps, down from a max of 2800-2900 fps, they should really do in anything short of DG, and they will not come apart. To me, the 300 gr. Federal Partition are pretty tame.
Of course, for deer, my .260 Rem and .308 Win are pretty deadly on deer/wild hogs, and the recoil is nil. I know that if my vision was in danger, I'd do (not do) everything in my power not to loose it.
If you are going to carry a big stick, you've got to whack someone with it at least every once in while.

mstarlingLooks like XMR 5744 or XMP 5744 is now called AA 5744. The web site with loading data is at:
Accurate Web SiteThey list a load for a 255 cast GCFP bullet as slow as 1771 fps. This one will be like shooting a cap gun ;>

I have killed several deer with the 375 H&H with loads you are talking about.
With the Hornady 220FP try 60 to 64 grains of IMR 3031.
With the 235 Speer I use 64 grains of IMR 3031. Both of these loads kill deer very well. I have shot the 250 Sierra on paper with 64 grains of IMR 3031, very accurate but have not taken game with it.
No filler is used with these loads.

Keeping in mind that John Wooters retired from our sport because of a detached retina I am concerned about recoil and in particular to the head.
A while back now I was shooting a Ruger #1S in 300 WM and I just never liked that rifle. On the same day I had a M70 to shoot also in 300 H&H. Someone noticed that when I shot the Ruger my face turned red where it had contacted the stock.
The problem was that the rings were too low on the Ruger and I exchanged them.

WyoJoeDitto on the recommendation of the 235 gr. Barnes X. I whacked this guy with one loaded over a healthy dose of IMR 4350. Recoil wasn't bad at all.

GadgeWe have a locally made [Taipan] 220 grain .375 flat point, here in Oz, that's commonly used for [very effective] pig loads in the 375 H&H. Like the Hornady 220, it's intended for use in .375 Win.
Full house loads are 79.5 grains AR2209 [H4350] for 2751 fps, or 77.0 grains AR2208 [Varget] - this latter chrono's at 2990fps in my Win 70. Probably a lot faster than it needs to be, for good performance on game, though.
I've also seen a reduced load, 39-41 grains AR2205 [H4227], for about 2100 fps. Haven't tested this one though.

RustyI have had great success with XM5744 powder and Nosler 260 grain Accubonds. If you go to Shooters Pro Shop at Nosler.com you can buy their "2nds". They work very well in my Safari Express.
Recoil is very mild in the heavy rifle. A reduce load with Accubonds ought to make a heck of a deer load and make it easier on you.

Savage99Cast bullets work well in big bores for soft game. Long ago I made up loads for my .375's and with 45 grs or so of powder they don't kick bad at all.
At least up to a 100 yds they perform very well on whitetails. I use a 250 gr hollow point SWC.

jackfishThe 225 grain Hornady Spire Point over 70 grains of H4895 and CCI250 primers in Remington brass makes a pretty good deer, black bear load.
You learn something new everyday whether you want to or not.

AtkinsonI would use the 250 gr. sierra at about 2200 FPS....
If I had your maladies I would shoot a 250-3000 or a 7x57 for deer, even an 06 or .308..why risk it...
A big bore is for DG IMO...

HP ShooterIf you busted your eyeball, and you want to kill deer, why would you even consider a 375 H&H?
Get a 257 Roberts, 260 Remington, 6.5X55, or 243 Winchester anc call it good.

AtkinsonIt amazes me that some folks will recommend a bullet designed for the 38-55 Win. loaded at 2800 FPS for deer...that is nothing but an explosive receipt for disaster...Apparantly they have not used the .375 H&H a heck of a lot..
Use a soft bullet like the 250 gr. Sierra an load in down to 30-30 (2100 FPS) velocity and it will work like a charm and you can eat to the bullet hole or just use full blown 375 ammo with heavy bullets designed for buffalo etc. and it will kill the heck out of deer and you can eat right up to the hole again...
I use the same bullets and loads for deer and elk that I use for Buffalo and suffer little meat loss with either elk or deer...

Well said Ray!!!
I see no reason for more than 2 loads for a .375, one soft bullet (if it works on smaller african plains game it WORKS on whitetails) and a high performance DG bullet. Either works on the small stuff.
Hunting whitetails/elk with a .375 should certainly increase your familiarity and confidence in the DGR for said use on DGR.
