Hi there Lads, I have just purchased a 378 Weatherby Mag from an aquaintance of mine. I am aware that its not the most practical calibre .... but i am not reliant on it as i have other weapons. I was just hoping to shoot the breez with some who have developed some more "sensible loads for large non DG game like Eland etc. any comments will be appreciated. thanx I just like things that go BANG!!!

You can find lots of Weatherby info at this forum: http://www.weatherby.dk/index.php ... I've been a member over there since shortly after the board started (it is a newer board)... The only 378 I have is actually a 338-378 so any numbers I might have are totally different then a straight up 378... Enjoy shooting that boomer... Ken.... BM The .378 Weatherby Magnum is a awesome caliber, however it will kick the living you know what out of you. I would stay with a premier bullet ...North fork, Barnes, Swift A Frames or Nosler. I shot a Moose in the neck with .270 grain Hornaday SP, close to 3200 fps at the muzzle. The bullet came completely apart with that velocity. My rifle is a Japan made and it is a tack driver. Federal 215 primer. Norma Brass. 115 grains of H-4831 5/8" three shot group at 100 yards. Barrel 26". I have shot everything from prarie dogs, coyotes up to Moose size animals with great results. Blair338/378 Sorry, I forgot that part. Yes it was with the 270 grain Hornaday SP. BM I was really shocked that the 270 grain Hornaday didn't do to much to the Prarie Dog, just zipped right trough him. However, I shot a small Mule Deer buck running though the timber at point blank range. I tried to hit him behind the shoulder, but when I pulled the trigger he had turn away from me as the bullet hit him in the left ham and completely removed that leg (what a waste on my part) and imbedded a piece off meat into a near by apen tree the size of a tennis ball. I called in a coyote one time, and he spotted my calling partner. By the time I got him to stop running and turn broadside he was down hill a little and ranged right at six hundred yards. First shot (a lucky one) dropped him in his tracks. When I went to see where I had him him, it looked as if some one had spilled a five gallon bucket of blood on the hill side. I think the .378 is a awesome caliber however, I think it has got a bad wrap in Africa because of velocity and poor bullets. With the premier bullets of today you can't go wrong. Using 400 grain 45-70 bullets??

No, 500 grain Hornadys. If shooting kangaroos with 375 and up is a sin I will be in hell for a long time 220 grain Hornady flat nose 375s and 400 grain 45 Speer (at 2100) are like electrocution on them. BUT, if you shoot a lot of them the big damage will come from the 375 300 grain Hornady round nose and 500 grain Hornady. Quite often when hit with the 300 grain 375 Hornady round nose or 500 grainer Hornady 460 they will look like a tank went over them but they will still be alive. Also, if in summer you chase them around for a while until they are exausted the damage from from a shot is not nearly as great as when you just snipe them. The other thing I have noticed is that the 375 acts like a small 460 and it changes when you go below 375. This might be a simple case that we are using round noses in 375 and up as opposed to spitzers with the smaller calibres. Roos Blair saw shot with the 460 were sniped. Sand bags on the bonnet of the car etc. I am big on stalking Although we do some walking when shooting as it is considered polite when taking a piss to do it at least 10 feet from the car Mike

BaldMummy Just come and join us. Let the Americans worry about whether they have shot 58 or 60 deer in the season. Americans should come to Australia for a true shooting experience. Mike

BaldMummy Coming back to your original post about loads for the 378.....can you link up with Alf on your powders. If Alf does not chime in......then can you give me loads you are using in "whatever calibre" This should be interesting as Alf talks about "my Africa" and gets all technical. I just need the loads you are using in 270...30/06 etc. Mike

Keith, If you are serious about coming to Australia...then post up on the Australia/NZ part of this site. The ideal trip for an American is the Safari that someone like Matt Graham organises. Matt is the best.....no bullshit, no con etc and etc Now if you happen to be in Australia we could catch up for the "party safari". You need more 378s loaded for the "safari party" but no problem as the loading gear is here. In other words you don't need ammo for the "safari party" as we have all the bullets and powder for both 378 and 460 Mike
