I am trying some Barnes Triple Shocks in my .416 Rigby. Question, do you have to crimp in one of the grooves between the bands or can you crimp anywhere? May be a stupid question, but I do not want to have to seat the bullet too deep since the TSX is so long I do not want to have an overly compressed charge. By the same token have to seat the bullet deep enough for it to chamber.

To quote the flyer from a box of .458-450 TSX's:

"The grooves in the Triple-Shock X-Bullet are not designed as cannelure rings. However, if the case mouth is positioned over a groove at the desired seating depth, the case mouth can be crimped into the groove...

Sufficient case neck tension is important... The minimum amount of full diameter bullet shank gripped by the case should be about 2/3 of the bullet diameter."

In my own limited experience, you will not be able to roll crimp into a TSX anywhere other than a groove without "accordian-ing" the case neck or buckling the shoulder. I would think with a properly setup sizing die, you should have enough neck tension to retain loaded length despite reasonable magazine battering.

It seems like it would be smart on Barnes's part if they made the top most relief groove match SAAMI OAL specs but they may not do so because they recommend paying close attention to "off the lands seating depth" for accuracy reasons.

You can use a Lee Factory Crimp Die to crimp anywhere on the bullet. I have one for my 375 H&H Magnum; I don't know whether or not they can make one for the 416 Rigby.

Mike I have been loading a lot of 400 TSX in my .416 Rigby. I found Reloader- 22 worked real well crimped in the barnes knurle. The Rigby case has lots of capacity so the long bullets aren't a problem. In a CZ 550 you cannot bring the bullet out much further as it will engage the lands. I load with RCBS dies and everything works just fine. Leaving for Zim in less than a month. Good Luck George

George,

Good luck in Zim.

I am using H4831SC. A 100 grain load behind the 400 grain TSX shoots a one inch five-shot group at 50 yards. The 100 grain load is a compressed charge though.

What load are you getting the best results with using RL-22?

Lee doesn't make a factory crimp die in .416 Rigby. However if you send them an empty case with a seated bullet and I think $20 they will make you one. I like the Lee crimp die on a big bore.
