I have a couple of some pedigree that are fine but very heavy. So, I decided to try out the newer Savage FSS 116 SS/SYN 375 H&H. These are inexpensive and a great value, IMO. I picked this one up with a Bushnell Elite 4200 1.5X6 in Warne QD mounts for about $500.00 less than a used Mdl 70 Classic SS/SYN goes for, bare. Except for the blind magazine, I can't find fault with the rifle. It has a controlled round feature similar to that used in the newer Sakos, a looong action that accomodates the 375, and I tend to like the Accu Trigger, although I was prepared to dislike it.

It shoots MOA and often a little tighter than that with my handloads. The gun with scope and mounts is about 8 1/2 pounds and balances perfectly. The Williams open sights are just fine and NOT FOLDING like the Winchester's.

I got this for use on my Oregon Coast Roosevelt elk hunt this November and for the wet country around Libby Montana. I'll be moving there in the not too distant future.

This gun has no snob appeal, but it seems to be a good working gun for wet country like the Pacific NW or Alaska.

This is interesting and has my attention. Being a blind box magazine, do you have to push the cartridge foward and slide it back under the feed rails, or just push them straight down when loading? Also will the bolt close by just dropping a cartridge in the chamber?

The Savage WSMs all have standing ejectors also.

I think this looks like a decent valued rifle. I've always though of taking one of these on a bigger hunt as a backup and leaving it as a tip if the hunt went well. Let us know how it shoots and handles the test of time.

Nice looking package. My 700 BDL SS/synth looks very similar, also in 375 HH.

This is a very curious bolt design. It appears to be Savage's attempt at CRF.

I think that Ed Brown is also using a similar design. I bought my son a leftie Savage 300 Ultra Mag to make into a 375, if he decides to go for the big stuff. Sunk cost in the rifle is $350, not counting the scope and mounts. My wife smelled a rat, and she suspects there are other plans for this rifle in the future, but not quite sure of my scheme. Completely reliable with factory and handloads so far. Shoots easy considering the weight and power.

Dear Sir,

I would like to know if Savage still a rifle chamber in .375 H&H caliber? The reason i ask was that they made a model called the safari grade, and is this the same rifle? Also if not which one is it?Because i was on their site looking for the model you mention and it is only chamber in .338 caliber. And last can i get the one with the special bolt face like the one you have?I will wait on your reply..BIG AL

If you look at the Savage site and go to the Weather Warrior section, it is listed at the bottom of the page; these are relatively new to the line.

I have a good friend who can afford any gun he wants, and he uses the earlier Savage Safari rifle, now discontinued, in 458 Win. He has used it in Africa quite a bit and while guiding in Alaska.

This rifle is light, and thats one of the reasons I bought it. As my back degenerates, several pounds off the sling means a lot. The gun feeds very well and is easy to load, has good Williams factory sights, and the Accu Trigger works well. It shoots sub-MOA with some old Winchester factory 270 gr Power-Point ammo I have here and am shooting up... the stuf in the old yellow boxes. The CRF system is working quite well; I've tried cycling rounds upside-down and at all angles. It performs perfectly.

One thing I have noticed is the looong action. There is more than ample room for 375 rounds loaded with 350-380 gr bullets loaded out just a bit farther to allow for sufficient powder.

These are (top) a Federal 300gr Nosler Safari round and one of my handloads with an old pre-encapsulated Hornady solid, showing plenty of length left.

I didn't know Savage made a 375 -- great news -- they tend to be shooters...

You can also call Savage and they will put together any factory components that you want for a nominal fee over the regular cost.

If you want a right bolt, left port single shot 350 mag, they can do it.
