Mafunyane450 gr. Barns X in .458 Win. Mag.
This grouping was shot at 50m, 2 shots on top is with Barns 450 gr. triple shock and 2 bottom shots
is with 450 gr. banded solid.
Both is loaded with s321 70gr. and velocity is between 2225 fp/s and 2250 fp/s

Big Bore Boar HunterI think if you put those on a chronograph, you will find that the solid shoots faster than the X with the same powder.

MafunyaneThanks John
I will try and get both to do the same speed then see where they shoot.

N E 450 No2I would either drop the powder charge on the solids or up the owder charge on the X bullets, pressure permitting, and see what happens.
It might not be a function of the velocity difference between the two bullets, it could very well be a function of barrel vibration...

Try to lower the velocity of the solid, that should bring it up. NE450 is dead correct, if you can up the velocity of the X and lower the velocity of the solid, that should bring them in. If you get anywhere close to 1.5 -1 inch at 50 yards, you are good to go.

AndyI would switch to another brand of expanding bullet and solid.
Or try another powder.
Should not be that hard as the photo above illustrates.
100yards with 3 X scope. 450 Dakota. Triad of 450 grain bullets.
If you just have to have the Barnes line I would lower POI by using a 500grain X at 2050-2100 fps and keeping the 450 RN-FN at 2250 fps.
But that is just the OPPOSITE of what you should do.
Short X bullet and heavy solid.
Seriously, I would switch brands.

IndyMy .458 shoots 450 grain TSXs about an inch higher than North Fork 450 grain flat nosed solids at 100 yards.

What rifle are you using?
In a CZ550 I load the 450TSX at 3.560 inches, crimping into the third groove, and use Lott load data. I can run 2300+ fps with moderately compressed loads. May be an easy way to increase velocity on one, without decreasing velocity on the other if the magazine and throat is long enough.
And just FYI, my rifle seems to work the opposite of conventional wisdom placing higher velocity TSX's higher on the target.

VVarriorI have not seen Northfork in the shops in South Africa. One shop advertises Barnes Banded Solids at R16.00 each and the TSX for R20.00 each. Nosler 500gr solids are R40.00 each and 500gr Nosler Partitions R26.00 each.
Locally made 450gr GSC FN is R11.60 each and 450gr GSC HV is R16.60 each. Rhino 500gr Solids are R15.00 each with Rhino 500gr softs R16.50 each.
Prices are getting crazy.

wombatMafunyane,I am certain,as other posters have suggested ,that the two projectiles are leaving the barrel at very different speeds.A chronograph will solve the puzzle
Australia
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of drought and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!

MafunyaneThanks guys!
I really like the barns bullets and also do not want to change bullet gr. The 450gr penetrates very good.
Will shoot them over the crony and load them to the same velocity.
That barns bullets are deadly accurate out off my cz550 as you can see from target, group was shot at 50 m. with open sights

MafunyaneI loaded barns banded solid down to 69gr. s321 with a COL off 87mm. And the triple shock with 72gr. s321 and COL off 90mm.
Hope this will do the trick

MafunyaneProblem solved.
All my loads is shooting same point off impact at 50 yards with open sights.

jeffeossoGood news
again, PROOF that going slower raises point of impact and going faster lowers point of impact.

SAFARIKIDThat 450 Gr X will go clean through both shoulders on Cape Buff! I have done it many times with a standard .458 Browning with a 22" barrel...A few stuck on the outside skin

scarabeusI'd give Kobus Du Plessis of Impala Bullets a call. Usind the 420gr RNFP Solid you do not need 2 different bullets. You can get 2400fps in a .458Win.Mag. with it, maybe a little bitless witch Somchem powders.
Theree is some info on Impala Big Game Cartridges
