| I think just for grins and giggles I would go with the 425 Express, 300 win mag brass will always be around, and I already throw cast slugs any way so whats one more |

| I would get a 9.3 x 62 which beats the hell out of the .376 because it will push heavy bullets. |

what's this?
the 376, in a 24" barrel, will break 2500 fps with a 300 grain pill.
of course, since I have a 376 and I am building another, it would get my nodd

The 9.3 will push heavy bullets, and the .376 and .425 won't. What planet does that make sense on? Sean |

I said nothing about the .425. Please take a reading comprehension course.
The heavy (long) bullets protrude far down into the .376 case when the .376 is on a short action that it was designed for, thus eating up powder capacity needed to push 320 grain bullets at respectable velocities.
But I am probably trying to teach a pig to sing... |

| 500, my 376 is on a mexican mauser... the definition of a short action... i get over 2500 with a 300 grain bullet, at 3.15" or so...
btw, the mag has NOT been lengthened... just the rails touched.
sure, if you stuff a bullet too far down the case, it'll be a problem... look at the 350 remmag and 284 winchester.
there aint not "real" short action being made into a 376... the factory hornady, with 225s, crimps at 3.1....

500grains,
The .376 Steyr was designed to fit the Steyr SBS 96 action --which is an intermediate length action -- so it has a 60 mm case and not a 51 mm case length. The maximum seating depth though is set by the length of the magazine box.
I have been using the SBS since '98, and I have interviewed the S-M design engineer when preparing two articles for African Hunter.
I still have my .376 Steyr ProHunter, it is a great cartridge and I like to claim it is a modernized 9.3X63 -- it is a 9.5X60.

404 Dakota or 416 Howell, standard length rounds based on the Jeffery case. Or the 10.75x68.

| Aaahh, more intelligence from 500. From Hogdon's site I see a 9,3x62 will push a 286 gr to 2400. A 300 to almost 2300, and Jeffe is getting 2500 w/ 300's in a 376.
Let's hear you squeal, pig. Sean |

| Some people seem intent to prove that ignorance is bliss, and having fired neither caliber they are an expert on both.

| Hmm, never said I had fired either. Gave my sources for both.
BTW, by stating a preference for the 9.3 because it would push heavy bullets, you implied that neither of the actual choices inquired about would. Enough said. Sean
RecoilPad, I appologize for the foul air I contributed to in your thread. Sean |
