I've prior posts written praises of the little .416 Ruger Alaskan that I have.

Today I took it to the range to sight in my new Swarovski 1.24-4 illuminated scope, getting ready for my leopard/buff/tuskless/hippo (and PG for bait) hunt at Chete in a few weeks.

Here's the target at 100 yards shooting 350 grain TSX's at 2475 f.p.s. I took off the scope and replaced it between the shots! Eeker Eeker Eeker

Obviously, the Warne QD rings work well.

The only "problem", if you want to call it that, is that the factory Hornady DGS rounds impact about 1.5" low and 1.5" to the left using the same scope settings as the TSX handloads.... but I don't plan to use the factory solids 'cause I'll have my Searcy .450 N.E. for tje tuskless and hopefully a hippo on land. And if I happen to have the Ruger and an elephant shows up, the irons are right on with the Hornady stuff.

Kinda nice for a rifle that cost me less than $800 and is pretty much "out of the box" except for smoothing up the action some.

I didn't bring the target home, but with the Searcy I shot 6 rounds today at the 40 meter berm. From a bench rest (with my hand under the forend, the right barrel hit the 1" circle both times and the left was 2" high and 1" to the left. Off hand... and honestly I believe that I was holding a bit low and to the right on the second shot, both rounds hit the 1" circle. I was using Hornady factory DGS 480 grain ammo.

I just put the Searcy up with a big smile on my face. My buddy bought me 2 margaritas to celebrate.

If I miss anything, I have no excuses.

Ernest, if you wind up with it in your hands when the right Jumbo shows up, 1.5" off at 100 yards will be nil at Elephant-shooting range. We're at the age where a scope is moving towards being a necessity, like reading glasses, anyway.
I'm sure that if you wind up REALLY liking the 416 Ruger, you could have Jim Kobe, Duane Wiebe, or Lon Paul do something to it that is VERY expensive...then you could feel better about the gun!!!
Hey, if I don't talk to you, you and "Mini-Me" (Little Ernest) knock 'em dead!...Biebs

Great minds think alike, My .416 Ruger set up with the Warne QD and an older 2.5 Leupold compact shoots groups similar to yours. This rifle and my .450NE Sabatti double will both be going over next year for a buff/tuskless hunt.

Good luck! Judge J in Montana

Judge: Congrats on that good shooting 416 Ruger. Enjoy it again on your trip, and tell us all about it on your return. Be safe out there.
