Here is a picture of my latest 470 MBOGO. It's built on a CZ550 Magnum action( started life as a .375 H&H) with a 26 inch Pac-Nor barrel. NECG open sights and Front Ramp sight. The stock was a semi -inletted blank That Dave Estergaard ( 470 MBOGO himself) had duplicated when he had his stock made. I did all the rest of the stockwork including the crossbolts( Johansen DGR style). Ther stock has three mercury recoil reducers in the butt and an F990 pad. This stock was the test Mule for the stock that's going on the .600 OK!! I did all the metal work including threading, chambering, second recoil lug and all the feeding work( this took about 5 hrs to get right!). This rifle will hold four down with a slightly extended magazine box and feeds and ejects slicker than snot ( It will actually feed four empty cases!!!)! You can see the relief in the rear bridge that makes this possible, The stock is being sent out tomorrow for checkering and I will blue the gun next weekend. My son and I took it to the range today for it's first test firing. After adjusting the sights, it put 4 rounds through the X ring offhand at 50 yrds. I was using very light loads in it, 106 grs of RL-15 with a 500 gr .470 Woodleigh solid. It's very comfortable to shoot, but the Mercury recoil reducers are no match for a good muzzel brake. This thing speaks with authority!! This load with this barrel length should be about 2400 fps based on previous chrono experience.-Rob

Very Nice Rob, you are becomming more and more prolific with your own rifle work. Is that the NECG adjustable master piece? Did you chrono it?

Rob,

That is a very good looking rifle, all the lines are balanced, nothing seems too big here or too little there. Yes sir that is a pretty one. You will have to post pics once the checkering is done.

Robgunbuilder, nice looking rifle. It appears in the picture to retain the CZ safety, is that indeed the case? You mentioned you may wish to sell it once complete. What are you looking to get out of the rifle? Do dies and brass come with the rifle? I may be interested.

Nice rifle Rob!
Was wondering what magazine box you went with in the end, since you said that it started as a .375H&H. Did you swap in a .416 Rigby box or is there something gained in using the .375H&H box since it holds 6? down?

How much does it weigh with the 3 mercury recoil reducers?

Thanks for sharing your *adventure* with us!

Yes, I retained the original CZ safety , Boltshroud and Trigger (yuk)! I honestly don't find the three position saftey that much of an advantage and probably more importantly, The stock was already partially inletted for the CZ safety( no clean way to fill the wood). To my knowledge There is no difference between the .416 Rigby mag and the .375 mag. All the big bore CZ mags seem to be the same as are the followers. I just made a sheet metal mag box that was a little longer to get an extra round down. By the way the rifle weighs 14 lbs and I could still add a Vais brake if anyone wanted it installed. That should cut the recoil down to about .308 win levels!
I'm sending it out for checkering and will add sling swivels. Metal will be blued next weekend. It should be finished in three to four weeks! I would accept offers of around $3500 or any trades for a double rifle, collectable winchester etc. I have only one set of dies( I need them), but 470 MBOGO dies are available from CH4D or I could make a set for the purchaser ( they are extra). You can't see if from this picture, but all the stock inletting is really quite good with no significant gaps anywhere. That stock alone probably has 100 hrs of work in it! It doesn't have alot of figure, but what's there is good. This is a real working rifle that you can take to Africa and expect to stake your life on!. It will not fail you!-Rob

I know it is probably sacrilige but that "in the white" makes me believe a SS rifle would look awfully good too!!

Rob,
Thanks for the reply. I remember talking with someone at CZ-USA about the magazine boxes for the CZ-550 Mag and he said that there were two variants - and each was marked. I think one was marked "375" but I just don't remember what the other was marked or used on.

Very nice! Should look even better when the finish is on the metal!
When is the first firing of the 600 OK going to take place?
Are you going to be buliding these rifles for others?

Hi Rob,
The rifle looks great man!! How do you like the stock shape as far as recoil? It sure has nice lines. I made the barrel 23 inches on my new one and a finished weight of 10.25 without a scope and it shoots and handles recoil very well. It really is nice to see another Mbogo that might see Africa. It would sure be nice to get other reports back. If you really like that stock shape and want to use it on the 600 let me know. I have the sister piece of Black Walnut to the stock I made for my 500 A-Square. The grain is very straight through the pistol grip and the walnut is very dense. I had it duplicated at the same time. Thanks for the look at your new rifle. I'm going to have to finish work here in Grande Prairie and get back to Canucks to rescue my guns. Canuck they're probably yours until Thursday and then there will be a knock at your door. Take good care you guys,
Dave

470 MBOGO- Great to hear from you Dave! I like the lines of the stock alot! As you can guess an awful lot of wood had to come off that blank to get to this shape! I used a Johansen rifle as a pattern as I really like the looks of their big bore stocks, It seems to handle recoil well, but not like it would with a muzzel brake. I think this will be the last Big Bore I build without a muzzel brake. I'd be very interested in that other stock you have. I'd actually like to redo my 585 NYATI with a wood stock and sell off the Mcmillan express. Let me know what you want for it!
Diesel-Dude The first .600 OK will be operational real soon. Hopefully within a month. I'm not in the gun buisness commercially and actually have not sold a gun in about 10 years. I basically build em the way I like em. I really don't want the hassles of building them to others tastes and timelines, given the demands of my day job. Like everyone else, I can be talked out of a given piece now and then. Particularily when a neat trade is involved. When I retire in about 5 years I'm giving some serious thought to building DGR's fulltime. Right now I'm having a ball gaining the necessary experience.-Rob

Dave,

So you're saying I have until Thursday to change the locks and practice denying any knowledge of the existence of your rifles?? [Wink]

See ya Thursday. I will be tied up in meetings all day if you try calling, but will see you after work.

Very nice work, Rob. I just tried a NECG masterpiece rear sight too, and really like it. Much more practical than a multileaf rear sight, in the age of scopes and flatter shooting rifles (even DGR calibers).

I would have guessed 10, maybe 11, but never 14 lbs. Where is all that weight? I should do that with my Lott.

Best,
Todd

Duh! Just re-read your original post, I guess the weight is in the recoil reducers!

Do you think they do anything in the sense of hydraulic recoil reduction, or is it just the extra mass?

I've tried Mercury recoil reducers before and was not impressed. I'm still not impressed with three of them in place. I think they are just weight. Certainly not as good as a muzzel brake.

Very nice work. When you start making rifles to sell I just might have to talk to you about a 450 rigby.
I picked up a 458 win yesterday. Got a decent deal on an interarms. Havent decided if I take her out to a lott yet. The gun is light!! Havent weighed it ye but it is quite a bit lighter than the #1 lott. So far I plan to restock,(bed and ect) change sights, add barrel band. maybe a m70 type safety, add 2nd cross bolt. I also am thinking about adding on to the mag like to get at least 4 down.
Once again very nice job!
