There does not seem to be much interest in this caliber To me it looks pretty good round. Any comments.

It's "slayer" might be .416Rem Magnum. Just look at the following: ammo selection, ammo availability, cost,.... The shorter case doesn't appeal to "Magnum Mauser Inc."

It no doubt a fine round, balistically it has to be....but the 404 Jefferys is a better round IMO and I like the case deminsions of the Jefferys, better for feeding and especially extraction...I think this may be the reason the 404 Jefferys is more sought after, plus a tad of nostalgia goes with the Jefferys as it should. There is a purportedly improved .404 Dakota based on the necked up .338 Lapua case. I know the popularity of the .404 Jeffery but this should have a lot more horsepower, not that it needs it.

I just measured the water capacity of a .338 Lapua Magnum case, made by Lapua, that I necked up to .423: 116.5 grains of water. The .404 Jeffery is about 115 grains of water. There is not enough difference to fool with in horsepower consideration. The Lapua is shorter and fatter and thicker brass of best quality. That might appeal to some. It will be a ballistic twin of the .404 Jeffery. Not bad at all. However it will be lower pressured than the current .404 Dakota "Short" for any given velocity attained. So is the .404 Jeffery.

I agree and it works well on a standard length action. The 416 Howell is almost identical except for bullet diameter. NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.
