Range time with the 500 Jeffery.
I am still relying on friends to shoot my BIG gun for me as I still don't trust my shoulder on the Big Boy yet.
I loaded 10 cases with Varget 100 gr. and about 4 gr. of dacron poly. Seated Woodleigh 535 PP to the cannalure. This load seamed to shoot smoother than the last load and accuracy is improving. Spencer was my shooter today. I think he was a bit intimidated with the big gun until he pulled the trigger. Then he wanted to shoot it some more. After 5 rounds off hand he said, "I gotta get me one of these, can I borrow it to go shoot some pigs?". He was tickeled pink. So I need to get down to filing the sights in after I get the load cinched down. Next I think will try the GS custom 540 gr,. FN solids and see if the accuracy improves. I wish I had the guts to just shoot the Beast myself, but I need at least 6 months more heal time on my shoulder. I did shoot my Rigby 416 and my Rigby 458 Win. Mag and did pretty good. All of these are Iron sight guns and I have little experience with Iron sights so accuracy does suffer on these rifles.

I give you credit for wanting to shoot one of these "Big Berthas". I shot 500A2 two times and was so stunned I didn't know where I was, or .........! Frowner

It was fun to shoot but I think it is near my max for recoil.

This gun seems to be a little more pleasant to shoot than my 505 Gibbs. Both rifles weigh the same but I do think the Jeffery, though stocked by the same maker, seems to be more comfortable to hold. You just can not imagine what it feel like to light off a 505 Gibbs with 136gr. RL22. I would get a headache after two to three rounds.

PRDATOR, have a good trip. See you in a couple of weeks.

I was at the range with mine this weekend, as well. Shooting it next to the 470 Ar loaded to NE velocities. Let me tell you, the AR was a pleasure compared to the 500. Mine's 9#6oz....

was shooting casts at ~2320, and woodleighs at 2425ish.. both 535gr

THe Jeffe was alot of fn.. i think I finred off 15 or 18 shots, Tom shot one, and with as light as it is, it packs a whallup!!!

You certainly could tell the difference in the cassts vs the jacketed loads!!!

Need to have a shoot with Forrest's 510 wells, Harry's 505, and my 500jeffe to compare

I dunno, my Wells still seems alot less ferocious than your Jeff even though the numbers are similar. And I have stood close enough to Harry not to want any part of the 505. By the way, Roger Biesen finished profiling my blank, he's the only smith I could find with an "express rifle" pattern for the Brevex. He also cut the barrel to 25". Now I need to get to whittling.

this is evolving into a grand post. When that chrono data arrives it will be so. Still slaving away at the mill with my 510KX barrel. It has been Africa-like weather, minus the humidity. 105-110 every day. Had to bail with the HD and the lettlewoman to the lake for the day Saturday. Today, I got to get that barrel fitted so we can "shoot" the barrelled action enough to get you guys some pics.

Who knows of the gentleman that casts .50 caliber bullets with a gascheck?

Appreciate the URL.

My 500 jeffrey w/ 25" tube clocked 2250 with 535 gr cast over 100 gr varget, Fed 215 sparkplug. I wouldn't worry about needing any filler with that load.

For a pussycat load, try 30 gr of varget over a 440-470 gr cast pistol bullet for ~1100 fps.

Thanks Jeffeoso and Paul H for the information. I will order some of the cast bullets. If they shoot well would that bullet be good for dangerous game first shot? Buffalo or Lion???

Rich,
Salute to the .510 Kayser Express. salute yankees

Paul,
Thanks for the chrono input on the load. About what I expected.

Leonard,
If you can even get 4 grains of Dacron in that case, with that bullet and that powder charge, then it NEEDS some filler, at least 3 grains. Wink

If 4 grains does not cause undue compression or work in seating the bullet, then I would stick with it. This has got to make the light load more uniform and give you a higher average velocity gain per given charge of powder burned: less recoil required to get velocity desired.

Thanks RIP,

I think anyone who is happy with the ballistics of the 510 Wells Express will appreciate mine, no belt.
Yours may even add a little horespower to the equation. Today I will get it chambered and headspaced...then take the barrelled action out of town and testfire it. Pray for me.

truck tire and rope...
btdt!!!

if yo uahve a "mule" stock, you can put the butt IN the tire, run a loop of rope over the barrel/around/through the tire, and hide behind a tree!!
