I know better, because I know you have checked everything else out, but have you started a new lot of bullets or anything? My .458 is sensitive to bullet diameter.

Edit: You might want to out a "Want to Buy" ad in the classifieds here.

1. Measure the bullet diameter; you might have some undersized bullets.
2. Clean the bore.
3. When you say 'the bbl is getting loose', do you mean it is unscrewing from the action?

I'm sure you have already checked (or will tomorrow) all the barrel makers to see if they have anything on hand.

There is a guy on Gunbroker that had a .458 barreled action for under $400 but he has not relisted it. It was just an A&B barrel though.

Good luck.

In addition to what George suggested, try some different ammo. I do not have any Lott but do have Win Mag on hand if you need some.

Again, you may already have done this.

guys thanks for all your help and encouragement I need it right now.this is where they seperate the gun nut hunting freaks from the dallyers and posers. I havent sense enough to let go of an imposible project and in the end it is where the satisfaction comes from. I hope~! I will hang in to the bitter end and have done more with less so we shal see. patriot

I am basicaly on my ass til monday when everbody is back at the bbl shops then we will see found one from midway douglas #5a and maybe brownells but I would rather a krieger or better blank because it will be eseyer to remake the front mount to a blank. one day here one day fit bbl and mount one day parkerise then shoot shoot shoot and pray.

george I mean the bbl is worn at the muzzle I think it is "loose" not groveing the buletts very well. already recrowned and it is not helping it wont shoot any of my diff ammo I have on hand .

this is realy strange heard of this but it never happend tio me before. o well will fight it to the bitter end. Mad

Crusher,
I have a new heavy .458" 1-in-18" blank - just shy of 27" (not profiled) if you need one... shoot me an email (jeffbpfeifer@hotmail.co_) or PM. I had this one made on a 1.375" blank as I was wanting a heavier barrel for a big boomer. Actually have two but wanting to hold onto the long one as it's more of a BPCR barrel.

I've got a Pac-Nor barrel it's deep chambered for the lott. Is 1.200 shank 28"+ long and .735 at the muzzle. I think its a #5 but could be wrong.

If it will help you out let me know and I'll send it off. What I would want is to have it replaced with the same barrel.

WHOA- Dude! Relax and lets do some good problem solving! Barrels just don't start keyholing like that unless they are severely damaged or fouled beyond all understanding..! You have another problem. Have you eliminated undersized bullets OR A BADLY DAMAGED CROWN OR TOTAL COPPER FOULING! Tell me, Have you cleaned the barrel with a steel brush from the muzzel? Did you drop it on the muzzel? CLEAN THE BARREL then JB it 5 times. Look down it for copper fouling. If you still see copper at the muzzel, JB till you see nothing! Get some factory.458 win Mag rounds and just shoot them. If they Keyhole hava gunsmith or some decent machinist re-crown your muzzel. Next, take a wooden dowel and add patches till you can barely push it down the barrel. Does it get loose at some point? Mark where it gets loose. IF its up near the muzzel. CUT that much barrel off. IF not you definately don't need a new barrel. I really doubt you need a new barrel. Don't panic. E-mail me and I'll walk you through it.-Rob

rob its bellmouthed. patched it with a dowell and it gets progressivly bigger twoard the muzzle I have no idea why but it just started falling off in accuracy then keyholeing over about a 10 shot string. the bbl is old an dhas been in use as a wm for years before I punched it out for this project. started with a clean freshly parkerized then scrubbed out put the scope back on it first shot at 25 bullseye 2,3,4 same then missed paper completly 6,7 changed scope thought that was it. still cant find paper move up to five yards keyholeing 2 ft low and 8 in left 8 4in hihgh 4 right 9 perfect keyhole sideways 2 left 2 down 10 changed scope back changed ammo better but still pasing through paper skewed at 25 tried original ammo in 2 other rifles no problems. I cleaned the thing no blue on the patches nothing bbl clean un obstructed, recrowned with carbide ball still wont shoot im at a loss to fix this without a bbl. tried some other ammo and it still wont shoot w/ ocasinal keyhole

How long is the barrel? What is the outside diameter of the barrel at the muzzel? It is possible that a thin walled .458 barrel could begin to bell out at the muzzel if it was less than .125/side of barrel thickness. Enough high pressure loTT loads could easily do this. When you first notice the patch loosening, how far are you from the muzzel. You might be able to cut off a few inches of barrel, re-crown with a lathe (not a carbide ball) and never notice the difference. This can be done by any good gunsmith and you don't even need to remove the barrel from the action. If your barrel length, however, is less than 18 inches I would get a new barrel, However, make sure your have at least .125 inches of metal each side of the hole or the same thing will happen. Remember to fit the stock you also need to maintain the exact same barrel profile as your old barrel. Shank diameter and length. Your old bedding will also have to be redone. Thats why I'm pushing to recover your old barrel given you have so little time left. Personally, I'd cut off 2 inches of barrel, re-crown with a proper lathe tool and try it again. You have very litte to lose.-Rob

I am certan that the muzzle is to thin and belled it with the lott loads 500 gr barnes at 2320. I hade a good friend and master smith look it over. this was a lightweight bbl lighter than I wanted for sure but I already had it as a bbld action it is 23 in right now it was 24 when this started we cut it recrowned and I dont realy want it any shorter and it will still be to thin untill about 19 in or so I will rebed and bbl should be done by friday.
I am sure it will just keep swelling or more to the truth im not sure it will stop so im gonna go like hell to fix it for sure. I cant be sure it wont start this again and I dont know if its aftr 5 rounds or 50 so ill just hustle and re barrell with heavyer contour.I also get to remake my scout mount so I am getting some help on this one. got the word from my smith and you about the same time that muzzle is to thin great minds work alike.

I will make this happen it will be fine its just a little excitement to keep me on my toes.

thanks for all your input and help.

Well that explains it. Never go less than .125 barrel thickness at the muzzel. The shorter the barrel the more muzzel pressure you have to deal with. It's not a insignificant number either when you are starting out at 65Kpsi. In some ways your lucky the barrel just belled and didn't split at the muzzel. I've seen that happen too. That can be very bad!
I've seen others learn the same lesson the hard way. This is the difference between those of us who know what they are doing and the wanna-be's on this site who pretend they are real experts.-Rob

I knew better but tried to get by without buying another bbl it worked great for about 100 rounds then went real fast I think it was due to increased pressure from the heat out shooting field positions and sight in in the heat and sun about 100 deg instead of my a/c test stand. I had a blank on order rebuilt to lott from win while I waited for bbl went ahead and test fired worked great so I used the blank on another project now I am humping it to get another. bbl in time

I just got reminded of why the cheap way sucks is all, such is life. Smiler

You can have a Douglas barrel shipped overnight from Brownells!!

The other option is cut a couple of inches off the existing barrel, crown it, test it and sight it in, and go hunting. That sould thicken the wall enough. Get you by until you get home.

thanks ray I got one from shillen.

got the old bbl off and started turning the new one its a shilen not my preferance but regular ups is overnight to my house from them and they had close to what I wanted.

the old bbl is actualy cracked at the muzzle at the inside corner of every groove tiny but two of them are straight across from each other and all the way through if just barly tried to get a picture bit it is not clear in the photo .

Im not sure what caused this I think cheap shity barrell steel. anp presure.
