Hi I am looking to discuss the merits of running a 480 grain woodliegh FMJ rather than a 500 grain FMJ out of a 24" 458 win mag. Woodleigh make a 480 grain with a special canular (sp) to assist with a bit more powder space in the win mag case. Presently with 500 grain PP's I get 2152 fps, but I am concerned with a 500 FMJ I may not get there due to reducing the charge as required when running a FMJ. I have bought a box of the 480 grain FMJ to load develop for a hunt in Zim on tuskless. My thinking is for 20 grains less in bullet weight I will have a safe and effective load.... Any thoughts gents? Sectional density suffers a little from .341 to .327, I wonder if this is a problem or would the small gain in velocity make up for the small loss in SD? All opinions appreciated Stu

IMHO, because FMJ's don't open up, a small decrease in velocity (as you have suggested and for the reasons mentioned) doesn't make a huge amount of difference. They still penetrate all the way. I can't see 20gns of bullet weight making a difference.

Hey 500N nice to hear from you. The saga continues, broke the 500 double, decided to use the 416 Rigby, but after building the cheak piece up to use scope I cannot get a sight picture with the express sights Now I am taking my FN 458 to do the job! If these 480 grains shoot well then they will go too. Cheers Stu

I went with the 480s as like you said "sectional density suffers little" and the fact that I can achieve 2160fps (fast as I want to go at the old proven 450NE velocity's and weight) with no pressure signs and with good accuracy sold me.

Hi Oz Yea my thinking exactly. When you look at both of the bullets side by side, that shorter canular sells its self. Now to load some and get shooting! 3 weeks to go! Cheers Stu

How far from the base of the bullet is the cannelure on the 480 gr. vs. 500 gr. I always thought the 480 grainers sat deeper in the case to accomodate loading in the 450 NE cases. Pictures and/or actual measurements would be welcome. Geronimo

Hi G To the best of my knowledge these 480 grain bullets were a special run by Woodliegh to assist the win mag owners. They do not carry the 450N canular. I am at work at the moment but tonight I will put the verniers to the test and post the reults for you. Cheers Stu

400 grn 450/400 cal. bullets (.41" diam) effectively have the SD as 500 grn .458" diam bullets. 450/400 from28" proof bbl has a muzz. vel. of 2150 FPS. I've heard of 22" bbl length on a few DRs in this cal. No mat- ter what bbl length I've never heard of anything less than outstanding penetration for this caliber using well made solids. So, your 24" bbl firing a 500 grn well made solid at .458" diam, at 2050 FPS or better ought to do it's duty very well & would be my expectation. Flat tipped solid bullets like North Fork and GS Custom at any given weight are reported to be the best penetrators of all de- signs tried so far, if I recall correctly. Jack OH GOD! {Seriously, we need the help.}

The Woodleigh .458 480gr is made to duplicate the Kynoch 480gr bullet for the 450NE no 2. M

Due to request (some of my pestering) Woodleigh has brought out the 480grn for the 458Winchester with the crimping groove set to suit.

Hello Stu: You can find the 480gr Woodleighs for the 458 Win Mag at Huntingtons. They have them in stock. http://www.huntingtons.com/bullets_woodleigh.html The 480gr Woodleigh softs and solids with the 458 Win Mag cannelure on them will allow you to crimp in the proper place for the 458 and the bullet takes up less space in the case than a 500gr or the 480gr standard cannelured 450 Nitro bullet. A2230 is "the" powder for the 458 Win! My loads are 72grs of A2230 which is a non compressed load and would allow for a little more powder if you wanted. You can shake the loaded round and hear the powder. Plenty of room. This load gave me 2218fps out of 24 inch barrel on my H&H. I shot this load in 95-98 degree heat with no signs of any pressure problems. The A2230 is very heat stable and with the non compressed load it will be very dependable in the heat. This is what I was looking for so I stopped at 72grs. Long live the 458 Win Mag!
