Apparently the Zulu "authorities" of RSA won't allow Gerard to import a barrel or two.
The slithy Zulus have been gyring and gimbling in the wabe for two years!
The .395 Big Five shall finally be completed with this one!

When I get that Pre-64 M70 rebarreled with a .395 barrel from McGowen, and chambered with the Manson reamer,
she will shoot like a ".395 Weatherby" and I'll call her "Alice." Wink

I have not looked at anything in .395, but what bullets do you have available for said?

Of course I like anything on a winchester, so you are headed in the right direction!

Keep us posted, curious about the bullets too.

Oh too, since you asked about the 500 MDM on the other thread, have not heard back on that, would like your thoughts too please!

michael458,
I caught up on your thread. Thanks for the response. There and here. thumb

Oops, I must forego the M70.
I had been waiting for the Zulus to allow Gerard to get a barrel.
Now I have tried some dummies in the magazine box.
The box length is just too short to allow best use of the bullets I have:

GSC: 340-grain HV,FN, and SP moly-coated copper monometals

S&H:
330-grain Brass FN,
310-grain VeloHexploding Brass HP Death Stars
and
325-grain SHarlow Ripper Brass VLD

Cast Boolits of .396" sizing:
410-grain LFNGC using LBT mould
240-grain FNGC using NEI mould

And many other resized .400" plinkers, etc.

A CZ 550 will hold 5 cartridges in the box, and allow long-nose loads.

Just as Saeed is limited to a true magnum box with his .375/404 Jeffery,
I will be using one for the .395 GSC

Very much like a .395/.375 H&H Ackley Improved. thumb

Now onward to the .458 Ruger ... in that Pre-64 M70 with a 3.6" box.
I could have a compact 6.5 pound rifle that will outdo a .458 Lott for sure, long nose loading, and thin, short barrel, with a 1-pound stock.

Properly balanced, that will one-up Will and his flyweight elephant rifles, and offer some serious "handiness" competition for the B&M. Wink

I have not seen so I cannot say for sure, as you can, but a 340 .395 bullet won't fit in a 3.6 mag box of the Win? How long is that case?

Ok with your 458 Ruger, but you are going to have to put that into a 3.6 mag box, long action Winchester! Remember the B&M is in a WSM action, and with the Win Ultimate stock and 18 inch barrel the 458 B&M comes in at 6.5 lbs on the money in the short action--still shoots 500 gr Woodleighs and Hornady at 2150 fps! 450 Barnes and Swifts at 2225 fps! Going to have to work hard on this one, and I don't think you can do it with an 18 inch barrel and that case?

Maybe? Wink

Without doubt I want to be kept updated on this one, since it could give me a run for my money, eh!

Michael,
Some .395 bullets fit fine and some don't.
It is like my .416 Dakota M70 Winchester.
Some of the existing .416 bullets fit fine with that cartridge and some are too long in the nose and need a longer box.

Dakota and Saeed both use Rigby length boxes with the 404 Jeffery case head size for the .416 Dakota and the .375/404.

... Or the case neck of the .416 Dakota can be trimmed shorter to allow a 3.6" COL and crimping on the cannelure. The .416 Dakota has plenty of neck length to spare.

Saeed's .375/404 would work in a 3.6" box with many .375 bullets, but needs a 3.75" COL with the Walterhog bullet.
