I recently ordered some the Hornady Interlock 405 300 grain .411 bullets to shoot in my Ruger No. 1 with a .410 bore. When I was finished loading them, I realized that I had never confirmed the safety of shooting these through the 1/1000 tighter bore. I read posts elsewhere that made me believe it was OK. But, since the No 1's have been out a while, I thought it might be a good idea to get some confirmation from someone who had actually tried this. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.... I have a No. 1 in .450-400, and shot it for the first time last week with this very bullet in Hornady brass, WLR primer and I believe 55 grains XMP5744. No problemo, and nicely accurate. Plan to shoot lots more of these as they are sure cheaper than the 400s. There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author

John and Bill thank you for your comments, I'll go ahead and give them a try. I've found the .410 DGS and DGX 400's to be very accurate with 4831SC in Hornady brass with an F215M primer, I hope the 300's are as good. Common Guys...there is more than 1 thou difference in factory tollerances for both barrels and bullets. The only time it could be an issue is in an old double where you are putting .411 (nominal) bullets through a thin .408" barrel. For many years Kynock loaded N sized 8mm bullets (ie .320) instead of seperate I or S size ( I=.318" and S=.323"). They marked the boxes '7,9 OR 8mm' - Worked just fine in rifles with both bore sizes. US companies only made ammo for S bore rifles and Europe make seperate runs of I and S bore ammo (still do) but the kynock 'half sized' bullets worked! CIP in Europe has standardised on .410 as an acceptable compromise...none of the old rifles used this bore Diamitre but it will work in either of the original...

Yesterday I went out and tested the .411 Hornady Interlock 300 grain bullets through the .410 bore of my Ruger No 1. They worked fine. Using the 75% rule I learned about on AR, I started slightly below the same charge weight I use for the 400 grain DGX/DGS bullets. One grain below my "400" load, the elevation of the Interlock was the same and velocity was the same. The group size (1.9" at 100 yds)was not as good as the 400's but obviously good enough.... I have both a 450/400 NE and a 405 Win. in Ruger #1s. I have tried all the available bullets in .410 and .411 from Hornady, Woodleigh, North Fork and Swift. My guns like them all. I like the Hornadys and Woodleighs for practice (because of price) but the North Forks and Swifts for DG or mean hogs. The .411 Swift A-Frames are not a cataloged item. You have to special order them. They are swaged down from their .416 bullet and must be seated deeper than the channelure. I called Ruger for the manufacturing tollerances and the 2 rifles are very close together with the 405 being slightly larger by 1/1000 in bore size. Suggest you find what your gun likes and stick with it.

Good info. My gun really likes the 400 DGX/DGS shooting less than 1" at 100 yds with them. The 300's are 1/2 the price so, for "plinking", I think thats the bullet. Cliff NRA Life Member CMP Distinguished Rifleman NRA Master, Short and Long Range
