Had a chance to shoot my buddies 470 Chapuis Rifle. At 50 yards kneeling with Federal 500 grain Trophy Bonded factory ammo I shot at 2 rocks about the size of my fist. One with the right one with the left. Both were direct hits. This was repeated by both of us. The rifle shoots very good.
The stock fits great and sights line up perfectly. Further tests [on paper] are in order, but so far this rifle is a winner.
He plans to scope it with a Swarovski 1.25-4x24 with the illuminated circle dot reticle in claw mounts.
I will be developing a 350 grain load with Hawk bullets for deer, pigs, and black bears. Results will be posted.

It is possible that the addition of the scope will change the regulation of the barrels. You may find it necessary to develop a different load in order to get the barrels to shoot together again after putting a scope & mounts on it.

Before your buddy races off and has the Swarovski fitted to the Chapuis, he might want to look at the eye relief. I don't believe that the current 1.25-4x has enough for that level of recoil. I was recently shooting a Merkel .375H&H with a Swarovski 1.25-4 and even though I was consciously pulling my head back along the stock, the scope touched my forehead on several occasions - it didn't hurt me but I reckon it would if I wasn't pulling my head back.



I understand that Swarovski are planning on releasing a dedicated big-game scope (in the new year, I think) which will have the required eye relief so if your buddy really wants to scope the Chapuis, then perhaps he should wait a bit.



I might also mention that, as an owner of a Chapuis .470 myself, they shoot wonderfully but I would not put a scope on a big gun like the Chapuis .470 - but that is just my opinion.

Think twice : I have a Chapuis 9.3*74, claw mounting, OK.
But I hate my Swarovski 1.25-4x24 with the illuminated circle dot reticle (not on the Chapuis). In fact the red spot is too large, it covers the whole bulleye at 100m. I tried the tiny red spot centering a horizontal.
line ,54 varipoint, from ZEISS, MARVELOUS. It doesn't screen of the bulleye, permitting accuracy, and the horizontal line is nice for following running game. I never estimate the Swaro circle "gulps" the game, I consider it an hindrance.
Speaking of eye relief, I don't disagree Jeffery, but all my rifle have regular eye relief, even the 375 and 460 and I have never been injured, save once because lying to shoot uphill.
