Pre64 M70 375 H&H Value Login/Join

What would be the value of a M70 pre64 in 375 H&H with 85% blue, stock has been shortened to 12.75" LOP, and the stock has been varnished? The varnish has been applid with a brush rather unprofessionaly right over the whole stock, checkering and all, in short a pretty botchy job but the wood is original and has not been sanded. The metal is all original including the two leaf rear sight. Bore is bright and no defects. I want to buy this gun but it is selling for $800, is this too much?
Thanks in advance.

What is the butt plate or pad? In other words if a 1" pad were put on the stock would the LOP be 13.75"?

Here is one for $2000.

I believe i would be buying it-its not that big of a deal to pick up a decent pre-64 stock-for a magnum all you have to is remove a little wood by the mag .

I agree with the others. With a little work maybe you can salvage the current stock. If not others are available. That price is not that out of line for the metal only.

As usual just my $.02

The action is worth $700 to $750 alone. Grab it!

If you are looking for just a shooter the price seems very fair. An original pre '64 375 with some wear should bring about $1500 or so. You could have this gun completely redone and have less than that in it with a nice bedding job as well.

Heck yes if the bore and action are good buy it for that.

The stock has been altered, so hooray, go ahead and glass and pillar bed and add any other cross bolts, traps, caps, tips, etc. that you want.

Put a wooden spacer of closely matching walnut on the end of it or a slab of oak or maple or African Bubinga wood thumb or whatever to be different. Strip it and sand the spacer to match the butt and stain and refinish and put a pad on it. Leave a time capsule note to the next owner for pasterity under that butt pad, and tell him you knew he couldn't leave well enough alone. thumb

Assuming the barreled action is unaltered and the bore is still excellent, that is a good price.
