I'm thinking of having a gunsmith build me a 460 WM. What would be a good strong action to handle this beast, and where might I purchase it(WEB-SITE please,if possible). I would like a three position safety and a controlled feed action. Basically a Mauser type. Thanks Steve

AHR would do it. PM Bitterroot, he's a 'smith there.

A Remington Model 30 will also convert well to that class of cartridge but the best bang for the buck would be the CZ already set up for 416 Rigby. All you would need is the safety added. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

I had my CZ 550 chambered in 458 Win Mag punched out to a 460Wby, I have put quite a few rounds through the rifle, and had no problems. "Speed is the key."

If cost is no object a Hein, otherwise the big CZ. Have you considered a .450 Dakota or .450 Rigby? Same basic round but without the belt and funny shoulder. Andy

If your going to the trouble of making a custom .460wby why not go all the way to a .500a2? Thats a big step up and if your concerned, you can always load it down. Use a CZ550 action. They work fine and are relatively inexpensive. Barrel costs will be the same and frankly Pac-Nor could long chamber a barrel for you. basically all the things you need to do to make a .460wby hold true for the .500a2/ The .500a2 is a much more versatile cartridge though.-Rob Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers to do incredibly stupid things- AH (1941)- Harry Reid (aka Smeagle) 2012 Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!

Another +1 for the CZ-550. An excellent action for a reasonable price. If money is of no concern, I'd look at Satterlee Arms. They remind me of the Brevex Mauser actions - which would also be a fine choice, provided you can find one.

Steve, Buy the Ruger M77 Safari Magnum chambered in .458 Lott and chamber to .460 Weatherby.

Ditto. That is exactly what I did. On the logic that there is no need for any more power in a .458 than the Lott provides. If more power than that is wanted, I agree that one should move up in caliber to the .510. The CZ 550 Magnum is the perfect action for the job. Unless you have a gunsmith who is also a certified machinist I would not convert a M77 to a 460 wby. Most gunsmiths will screw-up the clocking and you'll wind up with an headspace problem. It's far easier for most of them to just screw on a new barrel, face a long chambered barrel to headspace properly add a Rib and go from there. Do give thought to the .500a2 you can shoot 750 gr military pulls for fun with low recoil and then go out and clobber ele. with a cartridge that has a super reputation.-Rob Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers to do incredibly stupid things- AH (1941)- Harry Reid (aka Smeagle) 2012 Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!

Hi Rob, could you be a bit more specific about what bullets, and what loads you would use in the 500A2? The 750's don't sound like low recoil to me. What velocity? Also, don't you sacrifice penetration if you move up to the .510 Wells, and use a light for caliber bullet, at loaded down specs? Thanks S
