What is the current status for monometal bullets in .510" that can be used as all-around bullets for buffalo and plains game? What would be desired is a lighter than traditional hollow point paired with a flatnosed solid. For example, Barnes has a 570 grain TSX with a decent BC (.37) but it is cut to .509" and may not be the most accurate in some rifles. Plus, it is a bit heavy/slow for plains game hunting. GSCustom now has a US operation, which will make their 450 grain HV more easily accessible to those with a North American connection. They also make a 500 grain flatnosed solid. CEB has a 350 grain "Safari Raptor", but their lightest flatnose solid is 510 grain in .510". So how do people feel about bullets for the 500 Jeffrey, 500 AccRelNyati, 500 A2, and 500 NE? Is everything or is there room for a more optimal pairing of mono-expanding and solid? +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

Tanz, If you look at the CEB .510 Nitro Express line you'll notice the 475gr Safari Raptor pairing with the 510gr Safari Solid (still getting used to the new nomenclature). Sam has proven the 475gr SR at NE velocities so this bullet should be deadly from the cartridges you've mentioned. Jim "Life's hard; it's harder if you're stupid" John Wayne

Yes, the 475 grain .510" is a balanced weight for the solid. The question is what the length will be after a talon tip is added? If I remember, the nose was designed to be shot 'as is' and would need to be single-shot with the plastic tip. The picture of the bullet has a little ring on the nose. If it is a crimping groove, then maybe it would work fine. One thought that I've had about a deep seated bullet with the band on the base is whether some of the unburnt powder is trapped in the bullet shank? +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

The group of calibers cannot all use the same bullets (same softs, same solids) because the launch speeds and the case capacities are too different. Even the twist rates differ substantially.

Yes you'll need to use the 350gr LG Raptor with the Ogive Talon tips as the COAL will be to long with the 475gr Raptor in your M77 Ruger. So heavier bullet/long range ballistics you'll need to use the GSC HV - or have Dan cut you a run of FBH or MTH at the bullet length/weight that you want for 300yd shooting... My multi-banded .500 caliber CEB MTH bullet can be easily modified to match your case length/COAL bullet weight in.510 caliber; Ron has proven its accuracy at 300yds and it'll shoot flat enough for a reasonable 400yd trajectory. I just ordered a box of GSCustom 450gn .510" for testing. Hopefully, they will provide tight MOA accuracy. the timing of the new USA factory for GSCustom is fortuitous. Gerard: Twist rates aren't much of a problem for some of us with the 500 AccRel Nyati. My barrel will be 12" twist and has a calculated stability around "8"! Maybe it will drill through twigs and brush. In any case, I don't plan on shooting over 400 yards, ever, so the overstabilization won't cause any 'nose-up' sinking out at a kilometer. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

With the 450gn HV (GSCustom), I'm expecting a velocity of about 2600 fps in the 500 AcRNyati. That is about 6750 ft lbs. It should be a comfortable, below-max load. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.
