As Norma now has started up production of .505 Gibbs ammunition and cases, I am planning to built a rifle it that caliber.
BOOM
It will most probably be a South African gunsmith that does the work therefore I am interested in yours experiences of Truvelo Magnum Mauser actions.

When you say Truvelo Magnum Mauser, I presume you are talking about the Vector Magnum Mauser actions?

FWIW, there is a Norwegian man who has bought virtually all the Vector Magnum Mauser actions left (400 or so!). His website: http://www.arms-ammo.no/

Since he is closer than RSA, you might want to check out his prices etc.

Hello,

Truvello built a custom rifle for me on a K98 action and they did a sterling job. I wish to mention Jaco's name in particular, as he worked on my rifle. I consider him as one of the top gunsmiths in the country with more than 20 years of experience behind him.

I cannot proivide comment on their own magnum actions, but would not be surprised if it is a copy or a derivative of a German/Austrian action as the Truvelo company is owned by a German. Generally Germans do not cut corners and are precise.

Take care
Chris

Husky,

For the .505 you should use an action with a bolt body diameter of at least .750" due to the large Gibbs rim size (0.640"), which rules out the Truvello mauser. Karl Heinz Ritterbusch in Germany can get you the right action and mag box for your project.

However, it would likely cost you less to just buy a Heym factory-built rifle in .505 (US$7K?).

Hi
Truvelo claims that they can build a .505 gibbs on their Magnum action bewildered
Hmmm, the most economical way would be a Brno 602 action???

What reputation does M J Wapens have in SA?

One of the posters on AR is RIP and he has one of the new CZ rifles in 505 Gibbs.

I seem to remember he had problems with it but I think those problems were to do with the chamber dimensions and A Square made ammo.

Perhaps if you make a posting with a topic heading such as CZ and 505 or similar you will attract some people such as RIP with direct experience on the 505 and CZ/BRNO.

Another member on AR, Nickudu, has a custom made 505 on a CZ/BRNO

Empire Rifles use (Or were using) Granite Mountain Arms actions and the GMA comes in the .7" and .75" bolt diameter. Empire use the .75" for the 505, as 500 grains has suggested.

Just my personal feelings but I feel a 505 Gibbs needs to be in a real top end custom gun and that to me rules out the CZ/BRNO.

Unless you just have to have a 505, then you might also consider the 500 A Square. That is easy to do on a CZ, especially if you start with a CZ in 416 Rigby. The 500 A Square is simply the 460 Wby necked up to 50 calibre but with a normal shoulder rather than the curved Wby shoulder that looks like the chamber was cut with a worn out reamer Big Grin

The 500 A Square is also a true 50 with bullet diameter of .510 and so is better for bullets than the 505.

Neither is a good idea as the bolt body diameter is only 0.700".

interesting information on how to setup the bolt. I remember another posting on this, and I personally talked to somebody at CZ recommending they give Tom Burgess (Systeme98) a call before beginning production.

Thank's for all information!

ALF, I believe that you are right. So a Truvelo action would be fine just as Truvelo claims? I like to have the action slim.

Do you know anything about;

MJ Wapens
Gunsmith: Jan Bondesio (Snr and Jnr)
PO Box 353 Naboomspruit 0560

Does your box look like this?

I only have some original .505 Gibbs cartridges -but a bunch of Norma .505 Gibbs brass -ready to start working! dancing

Husky, I think you should PM an AR member named Pierre van der Walt who has at least one rifle made by the gunmaker you indicate.

Does Pierre owns rifles made by M J Wapens?!

I know Pierre quite well, had a dinner with him in Sandton just a month ago cheers

I will ask him!

ALF,
Truvelo makes Magnum Mauser actions on order, maybe they are of Vector's design?
