These kind of posts are very informative and good information. Sure beats the heck out of hearsay. Many of the ranges in the larger cities and such do not allow any kind of rapid fire, for some its hard to test what you have. I've the opportunity to cycle and fire my both my CZ's quite a bit and I'm pleased. My 404 on a win classic that Dennis Olson worked on feeds very good also.............I'm a big win 70 CZ fan........love them Mauser too. I will say this, I also have a few Wbys, my exwife somehow thought Wbys made good christmas presents and such, she bought me 3 or 4. I can't say anything bad about the feeding, they all seem to feed. One of the wbys is a ultralite mark V, its seen a lot of use in the last 10 yrs or so, it well worn and for a push feed I would say it very reliable. Guns are fun. I agree if you can't afford a reliable double, which would be my first choice as a PH, then the Ruger with a little tuneing is the only answer. After all we ARE talking about PHs here. Tools to make a liveing with are sometimes expensive, but I don't want a PH backing me with a K-mart Rem 700 PF,or any other PF rifle, no matter how much tuning it has had! The fact is, I have never hunted with a PH who used a PF rifle, of any make! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

GANYANA, Just a question, I have followed the test every time you have written about them. Can you comment on / or do you know if any of the tester's where LEFT handed/ shooting a right hand bolt gun? After reading and finding out about Harry Selby{sp}, I wonder how others mite stack up during the speed testing Stay Alert,Stay Alive Niet geschoten is altijd mis Hate of America is the defeat position of failed individuals and the failing state

jorge Have you ever used a Rem 700 with HS Precision in line magazine. Of course that does not fix the bolt handle. There is a gunsmith on 24HourCampfire who does a nice conversion on the Rem 700 where the bolt handle has three screws attaching it to the bolt body. Mike

Dave About 10% are left handed, and there are very few left handed rifles in Africa. Appy's certainly cannot afford one unless they get lucky (seen a couple with weatherbys) The second higest score ever on the speed shoot was Charlie Haley head of our Forensic Ballistics department. Charlie is left handed, and shoots a F.N. .458. The secrets to his succes is getting the three round reload down to under 5 seconds and using his thumb to work the bolt (keeping the rifle in his shoulder). This was the standard brit millitary technique with the Lee enfields. I shoot left handed with a heavy recoiling rifle and when necessary with others. I can work a Lee properly left handed (the cock on closing makes it much easier) -my father's left handed and ex military WWII/Korea/Malaya so got a good schooling- but don't have the strength in my left thumb to work a mauser, so I cant the rifle to the left, lift head and grasp the bolt with the palm of my left hand. Still fast, but not greased lightning.

Mike: No I have not tried it. My experiences with 700s equate to just one, a Classic in 35 Wheelen that had the lug recesses overcut so the bolt would overrotate and stick on extraction. Regardless, I've SEEN and read enough on the 700 succeptibility to extractor breakage under dusty/dirty conditions, handles falling off and safety problems including litigation, to steer me away from them. jorge USN (ret) DRSS Verney-Carron 450NE Cogswell & Harrison 375 Fl NE Sabatti Big Five 375 FL Magnum NE DSC Life Member NRA Life Member

Facinating! Do you actually interview your PH's prior to committing to a trip as to what gun they use (and presumably what condition it's in, how well they can use it, and ammo to I imagine)? I am curious, how many of you evaluate your PH's rifle before you commit to a trip? Brent When there is lead in the air, there is hope in my heart -- MWH ~1996

There are lots of great PHs with relatively crap rifles because they just don't generate enough extra cash to feel that they can invest in a higher end gun. Personally I do not care if the PH carries a single barrel H&R shotgun because I want to be the guy doing the shooting and if I screw up, then it's my own fault. If the PH manages to bail me out then great, but if not I cannot blame him at all because it was me who screwed things up.

Ganyana, thanks, the way you operate the rifle is the same way I was taught, and I'm left hanmded. Have never been able to keep the rifle in the pocket and operat the action with the right hand, just to unblanced Stay Alert,Stay Alive Niet geschoten is altijd mis Hate of America is the defeat position of failed individuals and the failing state

Yes, Brent, I do ask all my PHs what rifle, and caliber they shoot! They have all asked me what I will be shooting, why not the other way round? ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith
