Did you say you shot a seven pound 505?
What kind of gun was it?

When shooting my 357 revolver 4" barrel indors the muzzle blast is really annoying and ha will come after a short while. If I do the same thing outside I can go on "forever" without being bothered by the blast.

I allways use both plugs and cups for hearing protection.

I dont know whether the following is tru or false but...

Someone said that there is no way to silece the sound of a magnum rifle with muzzle break by using any kind of cups or plugs. The dammaging noise will just go through the scull to reach the inner ear. A good way would be to use somekind of protection that cover the whole head, like a motorcycle helmet [Eek!]

If a magnum rifle whith break has about 160dB of noise and the plugs + the cups removes 50dB of that there will still be 110dB that reaches the inner ear. This would be enough to cause dammage, over time at least.

Dave James, how much does that 8 bore weigh? I have only shot a few big bore BP guns. These were 58 cal and 12 bore. The 58cal was loaded with 550gr conical, 110gr of FFFg and weighed in at 9 pounds. I was not overly impressed with the recoil. The 12 bore was loaded with 775 gr conical, 160 gr FFg, and weighed in at 10 pounds. This rifle had a recoil that was very similiar to an associates 12 ga pump turkey load. I would not rate it nearly as severe as my 416 Rigby with factory level loads, let alone max loads.

Axel, mine is set up with a 26" bbl thats is ported, almost looks like the pro-port that Magna-Port does, the bbl is octagon and a good 2" across the flats, stock wood is iron wood thaks to a friend of mine, loaded up with the max load its weight is 13lbs. If I put the original stocks on it,weight drops to 10lbs.The beast well rock you pretty good, i have played with differnet loads and balls, such as added silver to the lead to harden it up much like the old timers did in africa, have only shot two pigs and bear with that ball all three over 50' and no ball was recovered.

i know nobody will take any notice of what i say as usual, but heres my opinion. the brain is desighned to float in liquid as a shock absorber to protect it! when shooting big bores avoid caffeine and alcohol a couple of days before shooting or on safari these deplete your body of liquids, drink plenty of water, you will be able to concentrate better shoot better, and less head aches ,caffeine is in plants to stop animals eating these plants because animals find its taste repugnant, humans are the only nuts who use it, like nicotine etc,its worth a try if you want to be a succesful athlete or please a woman you have to make sacrifices !!!

Dave, thanks for the feedback. Is your rifle a single barrel or a double? I am thinking it must be a single barrel from your statements. I really would like to shoot an 8 or 4 bore just once to "live the experience".

DD, there are several guns I have not shot! I have been to many ranges however, and I find that many of the gentlemen with these large rifles are willing to allow someone a shot or two.

That was Phil Schoemacher's article on the 505 Gibbs in Handloader a few years back.

kos; We know what happens when a water jug is hit by a bullet. The effect is probably similar although greatly reduced. It seems that no one liked my anoxia comment either. derf

The above data was compiled in a single morning.
Something over 60 aimed shots from the bench, for the chrono. I suffered some mental exhaustion and a tenderness on the bicep. After lunch, I shot 12 rounds of .416 and 30 rounds of .375. At my age, I was about "shot" for the day but thankfully, no headaches.

It's because you haven't shot any.

Max for me is 14 rounds of 585, or 20 rounds of 500 NE. If I do more than that, then I have to go home and go to bed. One day I shot 34 rounds of 500 NE, a dozen rounds of 458 lott and 20 rounds of 458 win mag. For the next two days I felt like I had been in an auto accident.

500grains, I shoot a 416 Rigby. I have never gotten a headache even after firing 100 rounds. Perhaps, it is you who live in a fantasy virtual world and do not really shoot big bores! Did your mother not teach you not to say anything if you had nothing nice to say? You, like several others here in FANTASY LAND like to attack and harass others, why is this so?

For your information this gentleman has shot his big bores and claims to not experience head aches either. Perhaps you need to question his honesty. Here is his post from above

It took guns to get freedom!

Too bad MEN don't post here too frequently and we must all suffer the childish behavior of BOYS! Grow up 500grains and realize that all people are NOT the same. Do you think you could go 15 rounds with a heavyweight boxer? There are many men on this planet that can, or are they all lying even when on TV, just an act?

Could your behavior be jealousy? Please explain yourself. I only spoke to my experience I do not question your headaches ONLY YOUR CHILDISH BEHAVIOR. I would appreciate it if you would simply leave me alone if you have nothing positive to say! I am sure that many others at Accurate Reloading would appreciate the same thing!!
