258gr Flat Base Raptor for .458 SOCOM in .458B&M
So I started working a couple of weeks ago with these bullets in my .458B&M. Michael has already provided plenty of terminal performance information and I think there's more to come from other hunters. I thought I'd share my range experience.

With 77gr of H4198 my loads were showing roughly 2880-2890 fps through the chrono on my first trip to the range. I loaded up some more this past week and had a bit of work to do with the scope.

This week they were clocked at about 2855-2861fps. Not sure why the difference, perhaps light, humidity, a barrel needing cleaning? Not sure, and am not too concerned.

Once I had the scope settled at close to 2.25" high at 100 yards, I shot a 3 shot one hole group. The shots were overlapping making about a 1" wide hole from left to right virtually all 3 shots at the same height.

I then put a Shoot-n-C on the target and moved it out to 200 yards. The picture is of a 4 shot group. I'd say this load would do well for most PG shots.

The 3 shots to the left were directly above the bullseye. The average height above the bullseye was approximately 1.8".

Phil

shocker

Again, incredible..... 200 yard group, 4 shots, 1.2215 inches center to center......

Yes, with this 250 you are covered on everything on the planet less than the mighty buffalo, including big bears and lion + all plains game, elk, moose and anything else. Go to the 450 #13 Solid and matching 420 #13 HP and then buffalo, hippo, and elephant are covered as well.

458 B&M... these three bullets, and you rule the world from that point on.........

As for the loads, you have them covered............

Just Excellent.........

Michael

Great shooting Phil. It appears that you went to the same shooting class that Ron Berry attended...

I think I need a few of those for my 458 win...

Can't say I know who Ron Berry is. The gent who hired me to my present job gets a lot of credit for showing me some important fundamentals to shooting accurately.

The credit for shooting big bores accurately goes to AR members posts and a lot of reading on my part.

These bullets are quite a hoot to shoot when you want to throw a bunch down range....albeit a bit pricy.

Sorry for the long response...

Ron Berry uses the pseudonym of ‘RIP’ on the AR Forums…

And this is why you both received extremely good instruction from a BB marksman…

My Winchester M70 in 49-10 must keep with the 24" barrel length ...
It loves those 430-grain CEB MTH bullets so well as it is.
I would not dare mess with it!

And I should say, "sorry for the hijack."

RIP
Jim,
The .500/360-grain brass Raptor in Rifle No.2 did a little better than the .500/430-grain copper MTH in Rifle No.1, but not statistically significant ... more shooting is needed. tu2

Phil,
Good work. It is nice when bullets go into the same hole at 100, 200, 300 yards. tu2

BTW, you weren't trained by Master Mitch Carter, were you? Wink

Master Mitch shot this 100-yard, 3-shot target with his 577 Tyrannosaur in 2001: 650-grain Woodleighs
Indoor range on Long Island.
"Hell, I Was There!" and Elmer wasn't. Wink

Thanks for letting me know who Ron is, I've read many of RIP's posts but didn't know his real name.

No need to say sorry, no hijack. I'm an electrical engineer by day and a would be "ballistics engineer" by night so I find that thread very interesting. I had missed that thread, and spent sometime this evening reading it.

Between RIP's results and what I'm seeing so far, the listed BC for CEB bullets is not making sense. It seems to be much better than advertised. This is only giving me more desire to do more precise characterization of these 258's at 100, 200 and 300 yards.

Thanks RIP / Ron! Curiousity is only increasing now, and I'm going to have to do a bit more.
