I have been told from about every guide from Africa that the 416 Rem mag has about replaced the 458 win mag as the African big game favorite rifle.I know there are alot more 416 rem mag rifles made these days than 458 win mags.I know there were alot of problems with the 458 ammo in the 1960s and early 70s.The 416 rigby has cut into the 416 Remingtons popularity but that are both loaded about the same from the factory. If it were not for Robert Ruarks books the 416 Rigby might has disapeared.I do love the Ruger 77 Bolt Action 416 rigby rifles but wish they were chambered in 416 rem mag.The 416 is way more versitle that the 458 ever was .I sold the only 458 I had and bought three 416 Rem mags. They are very fun to shoot with reduced loads as in 350 grain at 2400 fps.I also love to see how fast I can shoot 4 full house loads as quickly as possible at a target.I do all my 416 shooting from a standing bench and with some good old past pads.I find the recoil from the 416s are way better than the recoil from rifles such as 7mm stw rifles. It more of a big push than a fast recoil.

Many of the newer ph's buy the rugers because they look the part and are relatively inexpensive. That leaves the 416 remingtons to the winchesters and the custom crowd. Its easier to build a 416 remington IMHO than a rigby.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

I PH for water buffalo in Australia and the .416 REM. is probably the most common caliber brought over by hunters as well as being used by PH's. The previous most common was the .375H&H followed closely by the .458WIN.

So what is the point?

A lot of PH's have 416's in one form or another but there many Lott's and 470's too. The 416's may have a bit of an edge on penetration but the recoil, and effectiveness on game, is not much different and effectivewness on game may be less from a shock standpoint than the 458 WM.

The 416 Rem.'s advantages, all else being equal, is cheaper to reload, a possibly lighter rifle, and maybe increased magazine capacity.
