Basic question on building a mauser actioned 458WM

Basic question on building a mauser actioned 458WM
Besides opening up the bolt face and a rebarrel, what else needs to be done to a VZ-24 or commercial mauser action like an FN or husky to make a reliable 458 WM rifle? Want an open sighted work gun.

Lots of feedrail work by someone who knows what he/she is doing. The mag box needs to have the side walls tapered and thinned to accomodate the round or, better yet, buy a new drop box mag from Duane Wiebe (Sound Metal Products, $450). The cost of all this will far exceed the price of a new CZ550 Magnum in .458 Lott which will also shoot .458 WinMags.

Exactly what I was afraid of. Guess I'll look for a on old Browning Safari or Whitworth instead.

I've built two .458 win Mags on VZ24's and they worked out really nicely. You can use the old mauser box and EASILY thin it using a Power file. Use the three cartridge rubber band trick to get the dimensions right. No big deal. Let someone who knows how do the rails and more importantly, the feed ramp. Yes the boltface needs to be opened and the extractor hook reshaped too. While your at it, add a timney trigger ad three position safety. Both Guns I built used pac-nor barrels and were built light for hunting. They would shoot one hole groups at 100yrds! -Rob

Easier yet, I have an Interarms MK X Alaskan that is in exceptional metal condition, but it has a tang crack in the stock. I would part with it.

Cant go wrong with either of these choices, I have both. It would take a lot of gunsmithing on that VZ-24 to get a rifle thats as smooth as a Browning Safari already in 458.

I'm in the proses of having a 458WM built up on a FN M98 at the moment.
I had a "SOUND METAL PRODUCT" (supplied by AR member Duane Wiebe) bottom metal added so I can have four rounds plus one (2M not the larger 2MX).
Could have got a larger bottom metal but prefered the slender one.

Do they make those for the CZs or does anyone know someone who does? I'd love to be able to get 4 down in my 500 Jeffery. That's a gorgeous rifle by the way ...

I've got an interarms magnum action with the inside the bow floor plate latch that I'd part with reasonably. ($450 + shipping). It feeds .458 flawlessly. I've got a turned and polished Douglas barrel blank ready to be put into it, and was going to have that done soon. $250 more would buy the barrelled action, fit, chambered and crowned but no sights.

It's not just you.

I really like the charger hump also. An open sighted mauser looks 100x better with the charger hump and thumb cut.

Thanks for the comments guys.
Yes the rifle could be built heavier but I was keen on a medium weight to carry on long Elephant treks.
The sights are German made Recknagel sold in the states by NECG.
