Shooting the .458 Lott Login/Join

I am new to this Forum and so I extend warm greetings to all participants.

I have recently taken up rifle shooting again after a forty year hiatus. I sold all of my rifles then thinking I was through with shooting, but now that one of my grand-sons has taken up the sport in a serious way I decided to resume my own interest. And so I have purchased a .17 HMR "hummer" (what a joy to shoot and superbly accurate), a .257 Weatherby magnum "Vanguard" (great shooting rifle -- I lusted for a rifle in this caliber years ago but could not afford one then) and a .458 Lott CZ 550 American Safari Magnum!

I have always been captivated by the romance surrounding African Safari rifles and have enjoyed shooting them immensely. I shot a few British NE double rifles in various calibers (I can't remember all the makers but I know one was a Holland & Holland in .470 Nitro Express) that belonged to a wealthy gentleman who frequented our range -- I was a poor GI at the time and certainly couldn't afford one of my own. I eventually purchased my own "Big Bore Safari Rifle" -- an early Winchester model 70 in .458 along with the same model in 375 H&H magnum. We could buy rifles really cheap through the overseas PX's in those days (1950s & 1960s). I later bought a Browning Safari grade rifle in .458 Win. Mag. - a trifle light in weight for the caliber in my opinion, but it was a beautifully finished rifle and I couldn't resist it. A fellow GI had a .416 Rigby custom built on a Douglas barreled Brevex Magnum action (a nice heavy gun that mitigated recoil quite a bit) -- we both enjoyed shooting each other's rifles very much. I have never been particularly bothered by recoil -- I was (mostly) a military highpower rifle competitive shooter for many years (1903 Springfield A1 NM, US Rifle cal .30 M1 NM and Winchester model 70 HB match rifle) and have fired several thousand 30/06 rounds down range from all shooting positions.

Today I took the .458 Lott to the Range for the first time for what turned out to be a most enjoyable shooting session. For me, the recoil during offhand shooting (nine shots) was brisk but quite tolerable -- it was much more noticeable when sighting-in from the bench (six shots). In retrospect I think the recoil was quite similar to that I experienced when shooting the .458 Winchester model 70 and ny friend's 416 Rigby, but that is based on long ago memories and we all know how unreliable those can be. In my opinion the CZ American Safari Magnum is a fine rifle. I like the long sight radius afforded by the 25" barrel -- now that I am in my eighties I need all the visual assistance I can get when shooting with metallic sights (the old eyes ain't what they used to be). I like the +/- 10 lb heft of the rifle -- it makes for steady off-hand shooting (for me). The action worked smoothly and reliably with no cartridge feed problems. I do wish they would have affixed the front sling swivel stud on the barrel, but my foreward hand was not bruised during shooting. I found the trigger function to be quite good, although I forgot to try out the set-trigger. Overall the rifle performed very well and I shot three very decent (for my age) three shot groups at 50 yds. I think it is also a very well finished rifle (nice stock walnut) and, as I always keep rifles in "out of the box" configuration, I will keep on shooting it just the way it is.

I like the .458 Lott cartridge -- and this rifle. Now I can't wait to buy one of the "new" .458 Winchester model 70 rifles for a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

I am glad you are enjoying your rifle. It would be interesting to show us pictures of white with clusters obtained by you and to tell us the type of ammunition used (brand, bullet type, bullet weight ...). I want to release his rifle with a big trophy. Wink

Thank you, Oscar. I didn't save the practice targets if that is what you mean -- I will do so and post pictures from the next range session. The ammunition I used was Hornady, Dangerous Game Series, 500 grain DGS bullets.

Oscar, "Bad Boy" is an American idiom sometimes used to mean tough, cool, impressive.

For instance, as you pull your new CZ550 458 Lott from the box for the first time, you turn to your buddy and say, "I'm gonna bust some caps with this bad boy 'fo shizzle".

Cool

I understand, because I can say that the prime minister of Spain, is a bad guy, or pardon not that, but a silly boy jajaja Wink Smiler.

Oscar.

P.S.:Incidentally, I have to try a "bad boy" as the friend jamesicu, a Ceska Safari Magnum 550, but I get the salary to buy ammunition CRYBABY.

For Oscar:

I went out to the range today in advance of an approaching storm. I was only able to get off one shot on the sighting target from the bench at 25yds .....

..... followed by two shots offhand at 25yds .....

before the wind blew the target out of the frame.

The ammunition used was .....

BTW, Oscar, is your CZ Lott marked like this? (alternate views) .....

..... as I have read elsewhere on this Forum, CZ evidentally re-chambered existing .458 Win. Mag. barrels for the Lott cartridge -- nothing wrong with that in my opinion, but I think it explains the difference in barrel stamping fonts.

Hi, thanks for the results of your shots, I see that you have mastered the beast since the whites are very good clap. In fact the rifle is recalibrated, it was a Ceska caliber 458 Winchester Magnum and have reamed her bedroom to make it a 458 Lott. The rifle that I have indicates that it is only 458 Lott caliber. When I try the rifle and tell how I went.

A greeting and to hunt,

Oscar.

My Ceska

Very nice, Oscar. I see it is what I believe CZ describes as their "Safari Magnum" model in the catalog I have -- with the "European style" stock. I have always liked the schnable style forend tip.

Exactly, the truth is I have a very nice butt, with the two pins of reinforcement (for the 458 caliber Lott pushes right?). I'm very glad I purchased this rifle, but I still have not fired him, the ammunition does a nonsense here in Spain.

Yes, I have toyed with that idea, Code4 -- one of my un-fulfilled dreams. My grandson is presently completing an honors degree at University, but who knows what the future portends?

If I understand you correctly, Oscar, the ammunition is prohibitively expensive in Spain? If so, it is the same here. That is why I have bought .458 Lott reloading dies, et al.

BTW, Oscar, please understand that I am in no way complaining about your English -- it is far superior to my very inadequate Spanish!

jamesicus do not kid yourself, I use the google translator Wink, but I have studied English in school (in my time was compulsory from grade 6), I was disastrous Frowner. Today I have studied for some opposition but something quite basic. Surely your Spanish is much better than my English. I also purchased thedies of 458 Lott, but I still have not recharged, because I'm saving to buy another rifle, a Weatherby Vanguard in 300 Weatherby Magnum caliber. I'm crazy homer about hunting rifles.

Regards,

Oscar.

As I mentioned previously, Oscar, I recently purchased a .257 Weatherby magnum "Vanguard" rifle (black composite stock). I have found it to be a great shooter right out of the box - very accurate and smooth functioning. In my opinion, the .300 Weatherby is a fine caliber.

Please excuse the "thread drift".

Five shot groups from the bench at 100 yds -- bright, warm sunshine under calm conditions (no noticeable wind, light mirage) - Bushnell 3-9x variable power scope:

Reloaded ammunition: 87 grain Speer spitzer bullets, 70 grains Reloder22 powder, Remington 9 1/2M primers, Weatherby (Norma) factory brass.

I will get back on topic.

.458 Lott --

I purchased a Ruger No. 1 in 45/70. I like shooting off the bench. I like "big bore" and heavy loads.

Then I found a Ruger No. 1 in .458 Win. Mag. Now we're getting somewhere. No one at the range will shoot it when offered. Since it's a Farquharsen type action, I think about having it reamed out to Lott.

-- Then I read an article about .458 Express.

Maybe I should think about getting serious on the 50 BMG.

Mine is marked exactly as yours is.. and I bought mine new from a member here earlier this year.

BTW, on the side opposite the caliber stamps on both barrel and chamber is a '07' and a small cartouche (looks like a capital N with a dancing stick man inside). My CZ 550 9.3 X 62 has the same stamp except the number is a '09'. Does that number have anything to do with the year of production?
