Greetings and thanks for the input on the 470 ne double rifle. The load Butch suggested for hunting was 106 gr of IMR 4831 under a 500gr Woodleigh. Would you knowledgable types favor the FMJ or soft point Woodleigh Welded for buff? Any thoughts on trophy bonded bear claw for this application? Also a hippo is a possibility on this trip. Butch also suggested 35 gr of XMP 5744 under a 500 gr bullet for practice.

Marty, 1. I have used 45 gr. XMP5744 with 500 grain lead bullets to practice in the 470 NE. 2. If you do not like the IMR4831 load, try 87 grains of Reloader 15 with a Kynoch filler over the powder. 3. For the hippo you need solids. Period. For the buff, I would use solids too. Softs are fine for a broadside shot, but not so hot for bad angles. Solids will also kill plains game just fine too. Keep in mind that the solids will make a nice .475" hole.

I've been shooting 500gn lead at full velocities. If you want to get some full power practice in without the cost, then this might be a good option. I have a 500gn gas checked mold from www.mountianmolds.com. I cast from wheel weights, size to .476, lube with Javalina and use 5gns dacron over RL15. When loaded to the same velocity, they shoot to the same point as Barnes 500 XLCs

Marty, I think you need both; a soft for your first shot and a solid for any needed follow-up. I use Woodleighs for both configurations.

Butch normally regulates his .470s with 108 grs. of IMR-4831... Woodleigh bullet will work fine in a .470 on buffalo, but I prefer the Northfork cup points these days, they kill better, maybe a cup point and a flatnose solid is the better set up.. Sorry I didn;t reply to your whole post... It depends on where your hunting Buffalo and what are the conditions....If I were hunting Tanzania where I would probably find the bull I wanted in the high grass, then I would only use solids, preferably flat nose solids... If I were hunting RSA or Zimbabwe, a soft and a solid would be OK, however I still like cup points or solids or a combination of the two, for all my buffalo shooting. Given only one choice, I would shoot cup points from now on and never look back... I use 91 gr of RL15 in 470. I shot my hippo with a woodleigh soft & he dropped in his tracks, but you do shot them in the brain, so an 06 if probably even enuf. On buffalo the woodleigh soft seems to mushroom out to quickly and didn't penetrate to my satisfaction. Had better luck with barnes x bullets, I've got some swift a frames loaded and all shoot to impact point, but I haven't tried the a frames on game with the 470. In 9.3 300 gr they sure did well for me on large plains game & lion.

Butch ask me for the serial number of my rifle before giving me loading data. I suspect he is moderating the load for a slightly lighter frame provided by Browning on the Model B. Butch will certainly be the best source of loading data for rifles he built. Mike -------------- DRSS, Womper's Club, NRA Life Member/Charter Member NRA Golden Eagles ... My favorite load for my Krieghoff 470 NE is as follows: Bell Brass with Federal 215 primers, 88.5 grains Rel 15, Kynoch foam filler, Woodleigh 500 grain soft point. When using Woodleigh 500 grain solids, I reduce the powder charge to 88 grains. Chrony results noted in my "blue book" show this gives 2168 fps with 1" groups at 50 yds. Jim "Bwana Umfundi" NRA
