Crimp for Double Rifles? Login/Join

Do you crimp for your 470 or similar large bore Double Rifle???

Well I have read enough to know that you never leave the same round in a chamber with repeated firing of the other barrel. Some sources advise that the neck tension of standard seating depth requires no crimp...others say always crimp with Big Bores...

If you are using newer Solids ie North Forks or Barnes Banded, etc seems neck tension is somewhat limited by amount of bullet touching the case...any problems not crimping with these type bullets?

If you crimp do you use standard seating die or go to Lee Factory Crimp die?

I crimp everything 375H&H and up. You can't go wrong with the Lee crimping die. Better to be safe than have your double turn into a single shot with out you knowing it until it's too late. JMO

I crimp all nitro express calibers with a standard seating die. Does a Lee factory crimp die do a better job?

500grains,

On my 375, 416, 458 Lott I use the Lee factory crimp die and it works very well...much easier and better IMO than using the standard seating die in those calibers. The 416 and 458 Lott were custom order ($25 cost) sent an unprimed, and trimmed to length case with bullet seated (no crimp) directly to Lee with note and return address. It took about 4 weeks to get back..but well worth it.. I am unsure about bigger cases thats why I asked the question(s)...

May be someone here has a Lee Factory Crimp Die in one of the NE rounds????

The beauty of the Lee Factory Crimp die is that you can seat and crimp in two separate steps. Also, the Lee die applies its crimp at an angle perpendicular to the bullet shaft. More consistent.

Guys,

Lee does not make, and will not custom make a factory crimping die for the .470NE.Or any other large NE rounds. they do not have the tooling for that diameter. I've tried to get them to make me one.

I use the seating die to crimp. And yes I crimp all of my .470loads.

Yes crimp double rifle loads least recoil will jump a bullet in the opposite barrel and stick the bullet in the lands...you can get the bullet our with a cleaning rod or shoot it out, but its a pain....
