Is this going to be a 458win mag? Just wondering as I was going to take mine (interarms 458winmag) out to a 458lott but it did well on buff and elephant so Im not going to mess with it.
Is the stock "monte carlo" style. I shot a m70 in 450 ackley and that thing was BRUTAL with the factory stock.Worse than my ruger #1 in 458lott.
Putting an english style stock seemed to help my interarms 458 alot. I always wondered if a different style stock would have tamed the m70 ackley beast a bit?
Sounds like your a few steps ahead of me I got an enfield action just picked up some 470 capstick brass and a receiver peep. When I finish cleaning up the action it will be off for a barrel. My boy has turned out a new bolt handle and is in the works of copying a masterpeice front sight for it.
Keep us posted I plan on putting up pics as soon as I start making progress.

Rob,

That's because he is as big a fraud as Scott Sweet, that's why.

Mickey,

I don't know if the F990 is too soft for a leather covering or not. I'll have to inquire about that. Thanks.

Jeff,

The guy who wants to build my rifle is going to use a system similar to that on the new Ruger RSMs, sort of a recoil 'plate' to distribute the recoil over a larger area of the stock.

Isn't it interesting that the pattern of ScottS, Mauser, Mike 375 continues to appear time after time after time. Wonder if ol Mike 375 ever sleeps there in Australia. It's interesting too that ol Mike never posts any pictures of his guns or all those animals he's shot either? I Wonder why?-Rob

Pecos,

Mauser can't be ScottS because GeorgeS is responding to him and does not have him in the troll list

Another thing you forgot to mention, Mauser, is that you are ScottS.

Isn't the 990 a little soft for a leather pad. After the pad is installed it will shrink to fit as it dries. The 990 will compress a bit and when you repeatledly shoot it will flex the pad and tear the leather. The best hting that would happen is that it would wear the sides and discolour the leather.

George-

One thing that I forgot to mention is that my 338 Model 70 came with a very cheesy 2-piece (of shit ) floor plate assembly and I had to replace it with custom one piece unit from Williams. I wonder which style of floor plate does your 70 have? As for a butt pad, why not get a Pachmayr Decelerator without any baffles seen from the outside so that way you will not need to cover it. It looks like it will be a good field grade hunting rifle.

Robgunbuilder,

Do you think ScottS, Mauser and myself are one and the same person?

Hi George,
Take a look at the fiberoptic bead that they offer with that sight. It's really visible with the hood in place and exceptional with the hood off. It's also adjustable in the range of .060. Another point is that the hood and the peep will look almost the same size and might complicate your sight picture a bit. I've found that with my peep and front sight hood. At least they now make the hood remove from the rear rather than from the front so you don't have to go looking for it.
Take care,
Dave

The Pachmayr F990 has baffles which I'd like to cover up, hence the leather cover.

George, That's not a bad idea! I really like the F990 pad, and although I don't consider them ugly, I do admit that there are much more aesthetically pleasing options out there. A leather cover might be just allow one to "have their cake and eat it too", as the saying goes. If you figure out how your are going to do it and can post a picture, I for one would certainly appreciate it.

Cheers,
Canuck

Jeff,

There is a guy in Wyoming who wants to put this together for me; until I get the rifle back and evaluate it, I don't want to name him. He understands my parameters, and that the gun will be used on DG at some point.

George
P.S. What, you don't want to borrow my .470 Capstick? It is a big step up in power (and recoil) from a .458 Win. Mag.
