I acquired some 510 570 solids and plan on using them in my 500 NE, Does anyone have any experience with load data on this combination

Some of my old bullets above:

Left to right, the GSC .510/450-gr HV, and the .510/570-gr GSC FN ...

So, is GSC still making that .510/570-gr FN bullet?
IIRC they went to a lighter weight of 540 grains for the 500 NE, and it is beyond me why they did that.
Is not the 500 NE a 1:15" twist?
Plenty fast enough for .510/570-grainer.

Gerard, am I full of beans on this?

I used the 570-grain GSC FN in my 500 A2 with 1:10" twist at 2350 fps MV and it would reliably pass through 8 feet of +1600-pound bison, from tail to tonsils.
At 100 yards it was going about 2200 fps and zipped right through.
At the time the north bound bison was fleeing with a soft in its chest.
It dropped instantly when hit in its south end by the GSC FN
Amazed by this, I shot the dead bison again from 25 yards and it exited again.

At the start of this experiment, the bison ran off after a Barnes XLC .509/570-grainer did not exit on a broadside chest shot. I shot the dead bison in the chest again at 25 yards, with the XLC too, and got the same no-pass-through, but with greater expansion than with the first XLC shot at 50 yards. Both XLC's were recovered (25 yards and 50 yards, left and right below0.
Neither GSC FN was recovered, 100 yards and 25 yards, both exited on Texas heart shots:

Iron-sighted, 23"-barreled 500 A2 (.510 JAB) used for this experimental harvesting of a Kentucky bison, great meat even from a 5-1/2 year-old bull:

Your load data:
Use the 570-gr Woodleigh RNSP data and reduce it by 2 grains of H4350 with no filler.

Pierre van der Walt lists 103.0 to 106.0 grains of H4350 with "570-grain Bullets" in the 500 NE 3" Load Data Summary, pg 425 of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, 2011.
106.0 grains gave 2110 fps in a 26" barrel.
His reference is Graeme Wright, Shooting the British Double, 2009.

Start at 101 grains and work up (1 grain increments) to 104 grains of H4350 for your first outing.
You might get lucky.
No filler needed.
Pressures will be lower than with faster powders using fillers.

I base this on reading here and elsewhere, and my personal experience with the 470 NE (Merkel DR) comparing the Woodleigh RNSP 500-grainer in the 470 NE load to the GSC .475/500-grain FN, using H4831.
Pretty much equivalent in relative load adjustment.

The GSC FN of 570-caliber will be a little longer than the Woodleigh and get more velocity from the same powder charge,
so, to regulate you will need less powder and get same velocity with the same weight GSC FN.

That GSC FN will be easier on your rifling than any Woodleigh, RNSP or FMJ.

I am sure you will get a straight-line-pass-through from any angle on any kind of buffalo with this bullet, using the 500 NE to launch it.
Same for brain shot on elephant.
A Texas heart shot on an elephant might not exit, or it might ...

I shoot 96 gr of RL-15 under 570 CEB solids in my .500 NE.

Have shot both with and without a Kynoch foam filler. Can't tell the difference in them.

Hi RIP,

No, you are not full of beans on this. Remember that your 500 has a 1:10" twist and it will perform well with the longer 570gr bullet. As you rightly point out, the standard 500 NE has a 1:15" twist and that is why I recommend the 540gr FN bullet for it. Also, you are running the 570gr FN at similar speed that a 500NE will do with a 540gr FN. We still have the program for the 570gr FN but have taken it off the price list. We last sold the 570gr FN about 7 years ago and the 540gr FN is current.

Elephant

Cape buffalo

That said, the 570gr FN will be good in a 500 NE. It is just that the 540gr FN will be better. Where 570gr bullets, whatever they are, may not get the job done, the 540gr FN reduces that possibility.

raamw, load data with the 570gr FN in a 500NE is very scarce and I doubt that you will have any replies that go to the combination.

These loads are indicated with the 570gr FN in a 500NE:
83gr of IMR 3031 and do not exceed 2125fps.
86gr of Accurate 2495 and do not exceed 2100fps.
79gr of Hodgdon H322 and do not exceed 2075fps.
84gr of Norma 202 and do not exceed 2075fps.

Hi Gerard,

So the 540-grainer is an excellent elephant-brainer and "Texas" heart shooter in the C.I.P. spec 500 Nitro Express 3-Inch, eh?
Have you moved GSC-USA to Texas, or still in Michigan?
I have been out of touch, need to catch up.
I will stoop to looking at your facebook page, I do make the occasional exception. Wink

GSC bullets are the best alternative to the Walterhog for those who do not own and operate CNC machinery in their man cave.

Best,
Ron

Hello Ron,

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

You are right about the 500NE, GSC sweat the details so that our customers do not have to. We have not moved from Michigan yet, I do not have a work permit from USCIS yet. It has been almost a year since we applied and, every 6 months I have to leave the USA because my visa expires. It is getting expensive this flying back and forth.

The GSC Facebook page is something Gina started and it requires much time. I make contributions but do not know fully how it works. As far as Walterhog bullets go, I differ from you but, of course, I am biased. Big Grin
