I don't know that the classified board gets alot of traffic, so figured I'd post to the like minded big hole nuts. Well, I'm not sure I'm making the right move, but it seems that I might be happier having my P-14 built into a second 458 lott instead of the 500 Jeffrey. Mainly, to build the 500 into the same gun as I'll end up with the 458 will be a whole lot more $

Anyhow, if I get a decent offer, that'll clinch it. What I have is, 50 caliber douglas cro mo blank 1-15 twist, 25 1/2" long and ~ 1 3/8" nominal od. 49 cases of Star brass, this is much better then the bertram and to original jeffrey specs. ~200 600 gr gc cast bullets, appear to be from an NEI mold. There are ~ 100 misc 50 caliber pistol bullets that are cast but not lubed or gas checked, some 370 gr, some 410 gr and some 450 gr. I also have 1000 50 caliber gas checks. You might even be able to get me to let the 450 gr LBT LFN gc mold go, but I want to hang on to it. E-mail me an offer if you are interested, shipping for the cast bullets could get pricey, but still way cheaper then plinking with jacketed slugs. I'm not interested in breaking up the stuff, all or nothing. There might be something else, but I think thats it.

I urge you to reconsider!

Bigger bullets are more heavenly than smaller ones, and I would like to see a 50 caliber hunting rifle movement both in Alaska and in the lower 48.

You could lead this charge!

Well,

Lets just say that this isn't necesarily a permanent change! There is still that little voice that says, 585 Nyati or 577 NE.

Anyhow, I'm kinda torn, I've been w/o the lott for ~ 8 months, and in that time, the 500 Jeffrey hasn't been started. If I proced with the 500, it will be a single shot barreled action in the white, and I'll have dies, chaching, a bigger press, chaching, iron sights, chaching and a stock, cha ching to get. Conversley, if I get back what I put into what I already have, I'll pretty much be able to complete the rifle and have a thumper by the fall, to early winter.

Now if my smith had gotten to it earlier, I wouldn't be having this descussion, I'd just be scraping up funds, and looking for another action to build the lott on!

I really do want to test the 50 on game, both a 570 XLC and a 600 rn soft. I have this feeling that at ~ 2400 fps, either bullet will be capable of showing an affect on moose, that are known to simply ignore being shot by small and medium bores.

Maybe my efforts of pondering selling this stuff should go into doing an internet garage sale of the stuff I really don't need, and that would raise the funds for some projects I'd really like.

C'mon Paul,
You are the one that got me going down the .500 Jeffery road. My gun should be done in a month or 2. If you get out, who am I going to have to swap loads with.

Dave,

I did reconsider, I guess it was a fit of madness, or the lack of a big bore blues. Hopefully I'll be making some 1/2" holes in paper this fall.

Outstanding!
I have some GS Custom FN's, Barnes XLC's and Woodleigh's ready to try after I get my rifle.
I will let you know how they work, although I don't think that I will be wiring this up to my Oehler 43. Pressure data would be nice to have. Maybe someday with a Ruger #1.

The smith that is doing the work is planning on building one for himself, and hopefully he'll hook up his M43 and get some numbers off it. Heck, I don't care if he wires mine and takes some #'s off of it.

The only bullets I have now are cast, I'm planning on trying the 570 gr XLC, and perhaps the 600 gr hawk. I figure 570 or 600 gr @ 2400 fps should be adequate.

In a talk with Ed Plummer of AHR a while back, Alaska Bullet Works is also supposed to be making some bonded core bullet for their version of the .500 Jeffery (.500 AHR). I had Mike Murray of ABW make me some bonded core .510" 500 grn semi-spitzer noses for my .50 Alaskan to work with the Siamese Mauser magazine. He made up a special nose punch for these...Someday I'll get to shoot them! :-) Jeff Pfeifer

What's the story about the proposed 585 AHR cartridge?

It's not on the AHR website, and I wonder if it is a reality or just something under discussion.

Paul,
I have a LBT mold for 615 grain spitzer bullet with a gas check. When I head up your way I could bring you up a few to try out. How big of a bother is it to bring a rifle into Alaska? Is there a range close by Kenia? Moose definately show a reaction when hit with my 416 Taylor. I'm going to take my 470 Mbogo out with me this year with lead cast paper patch bullets. 470 Mbogo

Paul,

Man you crack me up! You change your mind so much about which cartridge to chamber your next big bore in!

Did ya read the post above? If you were looking to make a moose move when ya shot it, you could of just built a 416 Taylor years ago.

Take it easy bud!

470 Mbogo,

I don't know what the requirements/restrictions are on bringing guns into the US from a foreign country. I know the deel for americans traveling through Canada, but not sure what the deal is on Canadian's traveling into the states.

There is a range in Kenai, but I've never shot at it. I'm just outside of Anchorage, and shoot at the range in Anchorage.

Just drop me a line when you'll be heading up. I've been traveling a bit for work lately, so not sure when I'll be in town. If you're driving up, I might be able to meet you on the way up, as I'm working around Glenallen.

BW,

I've finally settled down a bit, I've got John finishing the 500 Jeffrey, and also building a 450 Howell, which will allow me to eventually build a 416 howell, as all I'll have to do is swap barrels. I figure that ought to almost cover me, but, after shooting my buddies 480 ruger, I finally have something else I'd like to where on my hip, after a bobbitt job to shorten it to 6".

A while back someone posted info about a 585 AHR, which sounded like a 585 Nyati without a rebated rim, and perhaps the shoulder moved forward, but there were no specifics available. For a while I thought the forumite was talking about a 500 AHR since it seemed to be the same concept, except .585 bore diameter.
