Can anyone suggest which QD mounts (rings that can fit on the sako receiver preferably) to use on a sako in 416 rem mag? Thanks.

I would take a look at Warne mounts.

I had a SAKO 375H&H Handy rifle and broke 3 sets of SAKO mounts.

On one ocasion the scope "flew" off the rifle and broke my Ray Ban Shooter sunglases and cut my face badly.

Warne rings worked great.

I use Talleys on my Sako rifles. It is a base set up that uses their standard rings. Rings can be had low detachable which is very handy and rock solid.

NE 450 No 2,

Hey I had a Sako Optilock QD's do the same on my 9.3 x 66 at the bench but fortunately I kicked it with my left foot & caught it. Stoped it from crashing on the concrete floor.

I spoke with the Sako (Beretta) rep and sent pics of how it was mounted. He Told me the front base should be mounted as far forward as possible NOT as per the official instructions which is level with the face of the ejection port. Mounted in this way the QD's are supposed to hold no problem. Makes sense as this way the front mount will take more of the load once wedged in by the tapered dovetail.

For me it was the lever on the rear base that was always coming loose but geez does this rifle shoot great - even in spite of all these problems!

Part of the problem is that the 85's have gone very light so recoil is high. Mine is 1 oz short of 8lb scoped - in a rifle that is like a 375 H&H minus.

Have not tried it mounted the new way so I don't know for sure if it holds up to heavy recoil. Spoke to the previous owner & was told that the scope did come off before but only in a lead sled. Unfortunately, he must have Gorilla'd the scope screws cause they kept coming off causeI can't get the rings off to mount in the new way.

Reddy375,

Sorry for rant! In answer to your question I do have a Sako 375H&H & I use the normal Sako Optilock (NB. the 2 piece base & ring combo which are more robust IMHO) rings & they are great. Never had a problem & I have several. I have an S&B 1.5 - 6 x 42 mounted and the lows fit just fine. Previously I had a Leupold 2.5 -8 x36 & I could have used an extra low for that. Although not strictly QD, they do return to zero like a QD but you have to bring the wrench.

As I said Sako also make a QD version with levers but I believe its very pricey (got mine with the gun 2nd hand with scope) and I think the std Optilocks are a neater solution.

I'm a big fan of Talleys & I have just ordered one for my Sako. The down side is that the base adapter has this screw that marrs the tops of the dovetail I am told. I am ordering the QD rings without the levers.

regards

On all 3 of my SAKO mounts the little "bumb" on the rear scope ring bent or broke, allowing the mount to move foward, then because the grabbing mechanism was stretched it kicked back off the rear of the rifle as a result of my shoulder stopping the recoil.

The Warne ring/bases have a "foot" on both the front ring and rear ring that control the stress of the rearward recoil and forward force that occures when the shooter stops the recoil.

Which model Sako do you have? I understand the new Warne rings don't fit on the A series and older; they're made for the 75 and 85. I chose Talleys on my Sako AVs in 375 H&H and 416 Rem and am very happy with the,. Lou

I'm doing a lot of cast bullet load testing in my big bore CZ's. I have mounted a Bushnell 8-32X target scope on using Talley QD rings. They are not cheap, but they have stood up to over 700 rounds of warm to wow! loads on 416 Rigby, 404 Jeffery, 450 Dakota, and even the brute 505 Gibbs. My shoulder is about jello the last three weeks, but the scope has moved from rifle to rifle, with no issues.
I'll just say that anything that kicks at my house is going to be wearing Talleys. I can say nothing more.

The Talleys have been very good on my AV Sako in 416 Remington.

I have also used an older pair of sako low mount rings - no problem.

Right now I have a pair of optilocks (they are about eight years old). I got those because of the plastic liners. I moved both mounts as far forward as possible, and put about 100 rounds through the rifle before I became to ill to shoot it. The scope is a 1-4x20 Swarovski that is doing just fine (since 1994).

If you really want a set of QD scope mounts I believe the Talley QD mounts with screws holding the mount on are best. A set of Warne QD mounts have worked very well on a 7mm Rem Mag Sako AV. Unfortunately the levers are on the right side of the rifle and get in the way.

I have not used the Optilock QD mounts. You really don't need an extended front mount. The Swarovski (and before that a Leupold 1.5-5x20) have perfect eye relief sitting right over the action.

FWIW, of course.

If you decide on the Warne rings I believe I have an unused set. I can send a picture if you contact me by PM. At the least you can see how they fit and where the levers are on the 7mm. I believe all Sakos for the last twenty five + years have the same "wedge" type mount "recievers" on top of the reciever.

Now that Dieter Apfel is etired, who is making his style of mounts. Those are real beauties.

Bottom line; think tank tough.

Bummer about your prior experience. With the 2 piece Optilock I have had zero problems with them on my 375 H&H with both the 1 inch & the 30mm version. I don't think the once piece version without the seperate base is as tough. I have one but its only on a 222Rem. Were yours the 1 pc or 2pc?

Having spoken with the Sako rep though I can see the wisdom of mounting the front base as far forward as possible so it locks up due to the tapered dovetail. That way the load is shared between the front & the rear base, rather than the rear taking up most of the strain. Makes sense. I believe the Conetrol bases work on this principle have no set screw. You just wack it in with a bit of wood and it won't move as the recoil just drives it in deeper.

Am looking fwd to the Talleys based on the positive posts here. Those that have em, is there clearance to put some lead tape on the dovetail to so the set screw does not marr the dovetail? This is the lead tape that people use to weight tennis racquets.

regards
John
