ANY INTEREST IN BUYING 30CAL SABOTS FOR 50BMG?

Nope. The petals tend to get stuck in the brakes. Not good.

What kind of accuracy do you get with a .30 Sabot?. I've heard not so good, but have never tried it myself. A muzzel brake is a definate No No.-Rob

Rob- The M1 tank uses a .50 BMG bolt action "insert" for sub-caliber practice. With the .30 SLAP Sabot rounds, it gets near MOA performance at 2000 meters. Accuracy potential is there, but the SLAP rounds may be a different sabot and they are aimed with the M1's fire control computer. So I guess it boils down to the fact that Sabots are not inherently INaccurate. Your results may vary. Personally, I would stick with quality .510 slugs.

I'm still thinking about doing something like this. In my .510-.505 Gibbs (note: 32" barrel right now) 145 gr of IMR 5010 gives 2075 fps with 700 gr. M2 ball. This is a really wimpy load, so I am hoping I would have no trouble putting in some of those .510" sabots with the 250 gr. JHPs intended for the BP muzzleloaders. I figure the speed would be pretty frantic for those bullets, so they should do a number on a gallon jug of water....basically like .358 Norma with 110 gr. JHP pistol bullets. .50 BMG is a much larger case, but Dacron pillow stuffing and a slow burning powder might produce tolerable, but not precise, results. I'm not exactly sure why you would want to do this. Fun, sure, but it doesn't matter how fast it goes if you can't make it hit what you're aiming at, and then you have to ask if a miss with a .50 BMG sabot launching a .308 bullet at a zillion fps (which therefore would stabilize in spite of the slow twist?)is better than a hit from a .300 RUM? I like fun, but what kind of fun can I have doing this?

I ASKED MYSELF THE SAME QUESTION,,, IT IS JUST FOR FUN....SO, LET US EXPAND THE TOPIC..WHAT ARE THE CALIBERS THESE ARE SUITED FOR?? THEY ARE .510 OD AND ACCEPT .308 BULLETS. MAYBE THEY ARE DESTINED FOR MUZZLELOADERS ONLY.. AS I MENTIONED BEFORE, ONE FELLA SAID HE GOT 5000FPS IN THE 50BMG.. I'M GONNA TRY SOME JUST FOR FUN. PASS ALONG ANY OTHER IDEAS.. THANKS. BROJ

The M1 uses a non-rifled smooth bore cannon. The problem with the sabots is not enough friction to overcome the inertia of the bullet it is holding. The sabot spins around the bullet while traveling down the barrel. I amy be wrong. I will get more information from a former tanker I know.

The maadi- Griffen folks are selling .50 BMG Sabots and claim good results with them. I'll bet they can be made to work, but not with a Muzzel brake. The Sabot could cause one to be destroyed. I'd be particularily afraid of a clamshell. I would advise everyone NOT to attempt reduced loads of any type in the .50 BMG case. I've personally seen a second concussion effect in one that wrecked the Muzzel brake and effectively torched the barrel. If you use slow burning powders, use a full case load of powder or make sure your life insurance is payed up. There is a whole lot of energy going off in these things and you don't want to get hurt. Personally, I never load below 90% case capacity with any powder in the .50 BMG. With good 750 grain bullets available, why bother? FWIW-Rob

Maddi could be a good choice, the brake is a lot smaller and may not destroy the sabot. Advise of case capacity is well taken, don't need no stinkin' detonation. end of story. broj
