"Taller Than Trees", by John Gordon Davis, who also wrote "Hold My Hand I'm Dying."
This is a story about an old ivory poacher, living in the bush, who sort of comes out of retirement to do battle with a gigantic old man killing elephant.
Great character, dark ending. Sort of a short Moby Dick with an elephant.
Buzz Charlton had recommended it to me, it's a very good read for you elephant hunters. I got a used copy on http://www.abe.com on the cheap.

Hold My Hand I'm Dying is a ripping read - especially for us here in Southern Africa!

Read "Taller than trees" about dhulamiti (?) years ago. Great yarn. Must find my copy or get another.
