Wow! What a great book! It is extremely well written and a "can't put down" type book. The story is about "Bvekenya", S.C Barnard, a young, adventurous, self-taught elephant hunter. Bulpin tells the story on behalf of Barnard gleaned from several interviews. The story takes place in the early 1900's in the "Crooks Corner" area between Moz-Zim-RSA. He gets beat up, robbed, stranded on an island and perseveres through it all to make a small forture ivory hunting. This is a little bit like Capstick's book on Wally Johnson, but better or Brian Marsh's book on the "Baron".

You will like this one nearly as much as Selous' book or work by JA Hunter.

Very good book indeed. An extremely easy and relaxing read. Captures what it was like to leave everything behind and start out in search of adventure and the unknown in Africa. Book was recommended to me (and loaned to me) by Buzz Charlton who also enjoyed it and was recounting one of the stories from the book for me while we were hunting for our own Dhlulamithi.

Just started another Bulpin book, The Hunter is Death. The story of another young man in search of adventure, George Rushby. Not far into the book but it seems to have the same easy readability of The Ivory Trail. A more detailed report to follow . . .

I haven't read either of these so I'll add them to the list. Another one I need is the one written up last month in Sports Afield about a reprint called Tuskers of the Lado Enclave. Wait a minute...that doesn't sound right?

The crazy thing is that I have a LOT of books and I don't feel like I have 1/2 of what I want.

Yes, the title is Tuskers of the Lado Enclave. I did not think it was a must read, okay, but nothing special.

Problem with a lot of these books is that they are out of print and they can get a bit pricey on Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

Thanks Mike. If it isn't that good there are plenty of others that are. I could pay for another tuskless hunt with the books I have.

Bryan,

Title of the book I was thinking of is Elephant Hunters of the Lado. I am pretty sure that is same book you are taking about. Book was written a long time ago but published in the 80's or 90's. Okay book but there are better.
