I just finisher reading Jack Shaefer's classic western novel; for the 2nd time. I read it 1st in the mid 70s + liked it so much that I wrote on the inside cover "One of the best 10 books I have ever read". Then passed it along. That was a book that was too good to be kept to oneself + not shared. So recently I had the urge to read it again + bought a copy. It had lost nothing over the years. If you have never read it, you owe it to yourself, for a very fie piece of literature.I have seen both movie renditions, + I have to say that I like Tom Sellecks better than Lee Marvins, but neither come anywhere close to the actual book. I recommend it highly.

Along the lines of "The Rough Riders", I also recently finished Jeff Shaaras new book, "The Old Lion" a novel on the life of Theodore Roosevelt. Another good one I recommend.

Both Tom S and Lee M were great in Monte Walsh and the book was even better, almost as great as Lonesome Dove!

Ray, you're right. I reread Monte Walsh about a year ago + it was as good as I remembered. I'd put it up there with one of the best 10 books I have ever read. Now you made me want to reread Lonesome Dove. I like all of Larry McMurtry's books, but that was at the top, along with "Horseman pass by". I met him several years ago when his son James was doing an in-store performance of his new album.
