A few weeks ago I visited some friends in Manhattan and we ended up in a late night conversation with some people about Peter Beard. I didn't know much about him but apparantly he has quite an extensive African photography background, dating back 50+ years. Question...is/was he anti-hunting? All the antis seem to love him.

I have a book of his, "The End of the Game". Very good book and the photography is excellent. That book isn't in publication anymore, I don't believe, but I do see copies for sale on eBay every so often. I don't think he is anti-hunting, but is very adamant about conservation of the species and habitat. I'm sure there are folks that actually know him posting here, but I get the impression he is more of anti anything that is going to adversly effect wildlife populations no matter the intention or cause. Didn't Safari Press publish a book he wrote recently?

A Safari Press search didn't show anything by Beard.

Peter Beard lived in Kenya for many years and may spend a lot of time there still. I have two of his books, Eyelids of Mourning (The mingled destinies of crocodiles and men) and The End of the Game. He did alot of animal photography but has also done some fashion photography (he "discovered" the Kenyan model Kadhija) as well as photojournalism. For Eyelids of Mourning (co-authored) he accompanied a wildlife research expert on a crocodile census and biology study and dozens of crocs from Lake Turkana were taken. There are some great photos in that book. I don't think he is anti-hunting but he is certainly anti-poaching and pro wildlife management. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

I also have a copy of "End of the Game" and it's pretty good. It is a coffee table book with excellent black and white photos. The focus of the book is the elephant demise in Kenya, loss of habitat, and the close of hunting. He doesn't address really address the subsequent ramping in poaching but it's very much worth the read. Somebody correct me, but I thought he was killed by an elephant; stomped into gritty play dough. He was also married to Cheryl Ladd or was it Tiegs?

Very talented dilletante and alcoholic. Cheryl Tiegs. He got stomped about five years ago, IIRC. Trust fund baby, etc. Gravity gets us all.

He has a studio in Soho called "The Time Is Always Now". Lawndart, what do you mean by "stomped"? Is Peter Beard dead? _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

What is wrong with Cheryl Tiegs. I think there are a few trust fund babies here on AR, if there are not then there are several overgrown babies on here. Yep gravity does get us all. "Science only goes so far then God takes over."
