Brain in neutral, riding public transport, as you do, I had this idea...

Robert Louis Stephenson "Black Arrow"

C S Forester "Brown on Resolution"

John Buchan "The Thiry Nine Steps"

Geoffrey Household "Rogue Male"

Frederick Forsyth "Day of the Jackal"

All these titles, put into some kind of chronological order, deal with a competent, self contained individual, out to rain on someone else's parade.

I rather like Brown on Resolution and Rogue Male. Depending upon my mood. But if I had to choose just the one, "Rogue Male" would be my choice.

Can anyone think of other stories in a similar line - "God is not on the side of the big battalions but the best shots"?
