Painful to read. Starts out in Angola (he was born in 1942)and ends in Tanzania in 1994. This is one of the ulitmate stories by a hunter that turns to being a PH because he lost his job with the government and had no other options. Seia started hunted in unregulated Angola and spent most of his time not working but hunting elephants. I have no idea how many he shot, but seemed to be over 500. As PH he appears to have taken 50 or more lions - the body count was impressive. He loses a company, gets conned by a couple of partners, ends up working several countries (Angola, CAR, Sudan, Tanzania, Namibia) for various operators and as a free lance. The book is full of pictures and poor writing. He is Portuguese and possibly the translation to English did not accurately convey his feelings, but the editors should have tried to make this more readable vs. a running chronology of game killed. Rarely does he talk about his trackers or his feelings ( he does discuss his feelings about not killing a leopard that mauled him). It was hard to read and not the style I enjoy. He is likely a very fine PH, but not much of an author. This book seems more of a diary than a biography. From some of his stories, he seems to have great respect for hunting and for hunters and occasionally touches on the subject, but spends too much time talking about what was shot and how he followed it up. I would rate this a "soft" 5 out of 10 and do not recommend this book except to someone want to get the a view of hunting in Angola before the war. | ||
