New reprint from Safari Press, just arrived and could not wait to dive into. In summary, this is an "advice" book. It is a collection of observations on various animals, stories related to hunting those animals, advice on guns and gun safety along with an interesting chapter on his thoughts on poaching and the impact on game animals. He states that poaching is a huge problem mainly due to unenforced game laws and lack of foresight by the British/Dutch/Portugese administrators in Kenya and Tanzania and Zambia. He makes a strong case for the value of sport hunting versus bush meat hunting, much along the same lines we think today.

His advice on rifle/calibre selection is interesting as he is a big bore advocate but sees the .30-06 as an excellent new cartridge. He considers the .375 H&H as a medium bore. He talks about the various bullets and touches on the needs for better built bullets. Too bad he did not have Barnes or Bear Claws in those days.

He writes in a formal yet friendly style using phrases and words from the early 1900's. An enjoyable read, but a bit similar to other authors who have written at length on the various species and how to hunt them. This book is not as good as Hunter and Hunter's Tracks but is "ok".

I rate this a 7 out of 10 with a soft recommendation to read. There are other books better and more fun, but this would be a good one for the J. A. Hunter fan as this is his last book, that I am aware of.
