" West into the Night" by Beryl Markham contains some interesting insights into Bror Blixin. Markham taught Denys Finch-Hatten to fly. Finch-Hatten had discussed with Markham his idea of using the airplane to scout for African game. Unfortunatley, he was killed in an airplane accident soon after discussing his idea with Markham. She approached Blixin with the idea and often stayed in camp with him and performed scouting flights for he and his clients. On one occassion, they sighted several good bull elephants within 2-3 miles of the camp. Blixin was expecting Winston Guest in as a client. So he and Markham went on foot for a closer inspection of the bulls. The brush was thick and they inadvertantly got too close. Blixin and Markham lay down and began to crawl away. After crawling about 100yards, they bumped into a large bull. Blixin standing up with Markham holding his waist from behind prepared to face the charge. The bull, in threatning fashion moved to within 10 yards. Some other elephants in the group picked up their smell and fled, the bull facing them followed. Markham asked Blixin why he didn't shoot. He replied " That is Winston's bull." Markham has other stories about she and Blixin in the book. Other stories about Blixin can be found in "White Hunters" by Brian Herne, another great book.

Insight into Von Blixen is also available in his own words: his autobiography "African Hunter". Peter Capstick reprinted it in his St. Martin's Press series of African hunting and adventure books. NitroX also mentioned "The Man Whom Women Loved" by Ulf Aschan, St. Martin's Press. Another good read is "Silence Will Speak, A Study Of The Life Of Denys Finch Hatton and His Relationship With Karen Blixen" by Errol Trzebinski, University Of Chicago Press.
