Russell Annabel is by far my favorite Alaskan Writter. He guided 30 years in Alaska not just visited.I think he is as good as Hemingway.I have not read the last two books Safari Press put together but I gotta get them too.His writings were the final straw on me going to Alaska. He seems like The Peter Capstick of Alaska but had his own adventures .It seems like we missed the good old days in Alaska but I bet he made it sound alot better than it was.

Some folks have compared Russ to Capstick ... different continent, of course. Mainly due to both their perchants for 'embellishing' their experiences. Annabel certainly has a great storytellying style. That said, I have all of the Annabel books except the Knopf; the Safari Press are all ltd ed. Great reads ! I must admit, though, that his Alaskan tales do more for me than the Mexico stuff.

I will be in the extreme minority but Russell's writing, while fine and quite popular, doesn't interest me that much. When Sports Afield reprints his articles, I usually skip over them. Just doesn't do much for me and I don't buy any of his books. _______________________________

I love Annabel's books. Yeah, he probably did stretch the truth a bit thin, but I really enjoy his writing. It probably doesn't hurt that I have hunted or worked in many of the areas he wrote about, so there many be that connection.

I like them, but fell he's a hell of a lot like PHC a good mixture of bullshit and reality. What do you think of Duncan Gilchrist writing? I thought it was good but unpolished, rough, and full of apparitions of reality. He was an interesting man, and I had a bit of a telephone relationship with him from about 1997 until I met him at the FNAWs show in 2001. It was kind of sad to know that a lot of these guys are gone. Dunc shared a lot of Alaska wisdom with me and when I finally moved to Alaska in 1999 he was always available for pointers and direction. Didn't mean to highjack the Annabel thread.
