Another good offering from Safari Press. Terry Irwin's biography is fairly typical of the young man with a love of the outdoors, turned game warden/control officer turned PH by unusual circumstances. He grows up in South Africa, starts college, gets lured to the game areas of Tanzania and works his way into a game control officer. After Tanzania became independent, he moves on to working as a PH, reluctantly. He goes through a variety of ups and downs, Tanzania shuts down all hunting, he moves to Kenya and the same thing happens. He moves to Sudan and Ethiopia to have the same thing happen again. It is not a hard luck story, but a story of perserverance of the trade he loves. He was not particularly trained or prepared to get into the safari business, but by hard work and on the job training, he learned the business. He worked with the Luke Samaras and had contact with many of the well known safari outfits and operators. This is not a book with an intriguing storyline but a an interesting bio on a man that hunted for the pure love of hunting. He likely has taken well over 500 elephants and numerous 100 pounders. He writes in a very easy to read and humble style. You will like this book if you enjoy biography's of interesting people that spent a lifetime in the bush. I would rate this is a solid 8 out of 10 as a fun read and entertaining. | ||
