Curious if anyone has read it and what they thought of it?

It's many years since I read this book, but recall enjoying it very much. What a character!

Incidentally, his grandson, William, works for Humani Safaris and is a great hunter, now aged 74. One of his son's, Raymond, is my partner here on the farm.

I read it recently. Here are my comments to myself about it.


Interesting "period book" with a lot of general stories about life in the 1870's. Finaughty is a trader turned elephant hunter turned trader. He is into shooting as many as he can, everywhere he can to get the ivory. He is tough but is mostly focused on making money off the elephant before they are gone. He seems a very "hard" person and someone not to be trifled with. He is an average story teller and writer. The book is not terribly accurate but a fun read for info on that period.

Looking back a little after reading the above comments - I would summarize to say that it is a fun book and the reprint is easy to read. If you like history and what the early African explorers had to deal with, this is good on.

I plan to read it again in the next year or so.
