This is another publication from Safari Press. It’s available in a limited edition hardcover, plain hard cover or in an electronic version. I received the limited edition hardcover as a gift, to accompany my limited edition hardcover of Bell’s Incidents from an Elephant Hunter’s Diary, another Safari Press publication that I reviewed some time ago in another post on this forum. As the title states, this is Bell‘s autobiography, told in his own words. It is a fascinating book because for a little-educated man Bell wrote well and his was a fascinating life. From his journey around the world by ship as a common sailor at the age of 12, to his hunting adventures in the Yukon during the gold rush, to his many African safaris, to his heroics as a fighter pilot in WWI, to the construction and sailing of his ocean-racing yacht, custom built to his preferences, to his later life in semi-retirement at his Scottish estate, stalking red stags and roebuck, as always with small bores, this book arranges all of the events from his previously published works in chronological order. This book is interesting in its own right, however, and does not simply rehash previously published material. The publisher claims that 60% of the material in this book is completely new. Having read all of Bell’s earlier books, and books about him, I can attest to the truth of that statement. I found this book very entertaining and informative, and I highly recommend it. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer. | ||
