I have not read the book. However, I have seen the original movie based on the same subject, "Man in the Wilderness", staring Richard Harris. Captain Henry is played by John Huston in the 1971 movie. Both movies tell the story in very different ways and both movies are worthy of viewing. I preferred the old movie even though it lacks the special effects and cinematography of the new movie. I also preferred Richard Harris' character and performance to that of DiCaprio's. But I enjoyed both movies.

Little is known about the true life character the stories are based on. In 1939 The Oregon Trail magazine told his story. It is recounted by Time magazine here: http://time.com/4171001/revenant-1939-true-story/ . The two movies and the 1939 story all give different accounts and all end differently.

The recent book, a novel, sounds like it would be interesting to read because it brings out subtle details that the movie did not. I say that based on the portions I have previewed. It has received good reviews. People seem to be captivated by anything on the subject.

Not a DiCaprio fan, but parts of the movie were made west of Calgary so I'll have to check it out. Same scenery as that shitty anthony Hopkins movie, the Edge. Wink

The original book that I bought in the early 70's was called "Lord Grizzly". I forget the author.Yes it is this story + I also saw the Richard Harris version in 71.A bit of Hollywood license but overall kept the storyline straight. The book is probably available on Amazon.I recommend it.

I saw it a couple nights ago. I was surprised to find out this morning it was so heavily nominated for the Oscars and especially for Leo. He didn't talk much during the movie so that probably helped him. It was over the top with brutality and the harshness of the weather. I doubt if anyone could have survived those events in real life.

You must confess that our race was much more hardy in the 1830;s.Seems we have built a society of pussies.Don't get me wrong;I doubt seriously that I could have endured Hugh Glass's turmoil myself but at least + would have tried, not like the one ones we have in Washington;lots of wind but no balls.

I read John Myers Myers' "Saga of Hugh Glass" 30 or more years ago when I was obsessed with the fur trade. It was entertaining as I dimly remember. Glass had a heck of a life, but is a hard man for a biographer to pin down.
