A summary and detailed report of his 1909 safari in Zambia. Not as well written as some of the hunt reports on AR, but interesting in style and his observations on game and the people. He hunted everything available in the Luangua area and other areas. He seemed to be a beginner at hunting and was a fairly poor shot, judging from the problems he had. He did not have a white hunter guide, but relied on the local blacks and he organized his own trip. He writes in a Victorian style except when he is criticizing missionaries efforts to work the native peoples. He does not show his views on the locals or other issues until the very end of the book, which I found to be the best part. The bulk of it was - I shot this, I missed that, I lost this, I shot the female. One interesting comment he makes, which leads me to think he is an amatuer in how he describes the best way to hunt leopard - get a goat, tie it up, tie a string to it's ear, hide in pit blind, jerk the string to make the goat bleat, what for the leopard. He never killed a leopard this way. He did kill a juvenile he walked up while hunting other game and never saw an adult leopard. He also wounded several lions and elephants. It is an interesting view of an era, before WWI that shows the attitude of the English to Africa, its people and animals. Amusing and fast read but not a "must" read. On a 1 to 10 scale with 10 being the best - 5 . | ||
