Not long ago, I had a friend recommend to me Peter Hathaway Capstick's "Death In The Long Grass".I've been shooting for over 30 years, but I'm NOT a hunter. Nonetheless, I found Capstick's book to be captivating. The hook is set!
I just learned of John Taylor's "African Rifles And Cartridges" and will call the local library when they open this morning.
Would any of you gentlemen care to make a suggestion of other books that are similar?
I'm 55 years old, have arthritis in both knees and can barely afford to buy primers and powder, nevermind the cost of a safari. If I can't go with you in body, By God, I WON'T be stopped from going in spirit, at least.

Good and safe hunting to all of you,
JG

Not neccicaraly the same type of book, but for someone that want to "relive" a real African adventure, read Henno Martin's "Sheltering Desert". It is IMO one of the most captivating stories ever written, its about 2 German geologists that escaped into the Namib desert with the outbreak of WW11, and their struggle to survive there for over 3 years, with just a 9mm pistol and a 12g shotgun to hunt with.

The book that I believe did the most to whet my appetite is Robert Ruark's "Horn of the Hunter." Check this one for sure - it's a must read.

Capstick has several more that you might find interesting as well including "Safari the Last Adventure," and "Death in the Dark Continent." I also enjoyed Burger's "Horned Death" about Cape Buffalo hunting.

"Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult."

There isn't a bad book by Capstick. And if you can find a copy of his two single safari books Sands of Silence and ????? I can't remember the other one.

None the less look for both of them.

While these books may not be similar they are in my opinion "must reads"

A Pioneering Hunter Brian Marsh

The Hunting Imperative Richerd Harland

Ndlovu Richard Harland

Months of the Sun Ian Nychens

Kambaku Harry Manners

Hunters Tracks John Hunter

Maneaters & Marauders John Taylor

Horn of the Hunter Robert Ruark

Bell of Africa W.D.M. Bell

The classic remains "African Rifles and Cartridges" by John Taylor. All are currently in print and available from Rowland Ward Publications in J'Berg.

Hi JG
I cut my reading teeth on White Hunters by Brian Hearne I thought it was great.
The others I liked were also by Peter Hathaway Capstick, as well as The Man Eaters of Tsavo by Lt. Colonel J.H. Patterson, D.S.O.
You can also get the movie the Ghost and the Darkness which is about the Lions of Tsavo.
