Of all my Africa books, I think I get as much enjoyment from Peter Beard's classic than most. I know Beard is very controversial in many circles, but, from a purely historical perspective, it is very, very good. There are lots of great photos and prose. Beard, although a very different sort, is a very interesting individual.
