Another from the Capstick Collection published by St. Martins Press a few years back. A short, almost essay type book about the Capt. Melliss hunt during his leave from the British military in Somalia. It is an account of one hunt for lions and follows with several chapters on warthog hunting with spears on horseback. It appears to have been written about 1890 or so and is fairly typical of period books by hunter/writers/adventurers. He writes in a style that is almost "high schoolish" or "oh gosh, did you just see that!". It is fun, refreshing and conveys to the reader the excitement he has as he hunts lions and warthogs. He briefly talks about the Somali people and the conflicts with the Abyssinians and tribal wars/raids. If it were not for the period, you would assume he is a glutton for killing as many lions (especially females with cubs) as he does. He takes 5 in one evening! It is refreshing, fun and a different look at hunting in that time period from several other books of that period. Elephants are not part of this nor are other "names" of the era. I would rate this as very readable and 7.5 on the dogcat scale. It is not a "must read", but it should be on your second tier of Africa books. | ||
