Another disappointment, but not as bad as "Travel and Adventure in Southeast Africa". This book is typical Selous and very well written. The problem for me is the content. This book was written at the urging of Theodore Roosevelt. Teddy even wrote the intro. It is mostly commentary on why African game is colored the way it is, a discussion of evolution, then vignettes on the various animals Selous hunted. He ends up with a discussion on the Bushman and a few stories on his hunts - most of which were told in his previous two books. This will appeal to the naturalist and the student of African hunting/settling by Europeans. Selous seemed "pushed" to come up with material to put in this book and consequently, it is not as fascinating as his first book. I rate this a 6.5 out of 10 with a soft recommendation to read. If you are a die hard Selous fan, by all means, read it. | ||
